How do you know when a coil is done?

Taste and performance are both indicative that a coil is gunking up.

Does it actually stop working?

Only if the coil "burns out" or "pops". Generally they just start to slowly suck, lol.

Or does it just start tasting burnt?

The taste will definitely change, and yes, tasting burnt is an indicator, depending on a few different factors.

Is it possible to get a one nasty burnt hit out of a coil that still has life left in it?

Absolutely. Again, depending on what you're vaping on, a dry/burnt hit doesn't necessarily mean that the coil is toast, it means that it wasn't wet enough for one reason or another. Hard to say without knowing the device and your settings.

Ok, I guess that wasn't A question :D

Thanks!

Your coils done when you think it is. When I find vapor production, flavor, hot spots (burnt taste here and there), or it starts dry hitting because its so full of gunk. If the coil affects my vape in anyway I just change it. I do find it important on the other hand to work a coil in before lung hitting the hell out of it. If your a lung hitter or just take big long draws. Be sure that you give your wick time to reabsorb juice and you'll find your coils last longer.
