Yet another town in Northern California has just sneakily passed an ordinance of no smoking within 30' of anywhere in town.
Last month it was the University town of Arcata. This month it is the shipping town of Eureka.
QUIETLY they rob the public of their rights. (for the sake of the children rolleyes).
I just ran across this article tonight in the Northcoast Journal
Go to your newspapers and search "smoking". YOU might be in the same predicament and not even realize it.
Be sure to check the notices sections for the past months. ?
There might be more towns up this way sneaking this through too. I don't know all the paper's names. How frustrating!

Interesting read.
(a few excerpts from the article in the Northcoast Journal :)
"Last month, the Eureka City Council quietly passed a wide-ranging new anti-smoking ordinance, prohibiting smoking more or less everywhere apart from your own home" .... etc... and the people are LIVID...
"the people who care aren't in the habit of reading council agendas. Unlike zoning changes or conditional use permits, there's no formal notification procedure for this type of action." ....

This no outdoor smoking thing has gone too far. Folks have to be on the lookout for this kind of thing. The towns seem not to care about small struggling business that may have to close due to these regulations. The council mentions an amendment, but im sure plenty will still feel the blow. I can't believe people put this stuff together with no peripheral vision. They have ONE goal....keep the demoralization of smokers alive. Driving them outside was not enough! Abuse of power as far as I'm concerned.

I agree with you.
Also in this town ordinance is a 100' no smoking in fresh air along the beach boardwalk.
The town (2 council persons) is listening to a no-tobacco puppet of Glantz instead of to the tobacco Harm Reduction people. He is handing out literature and pamphlets left and right. The THR people need to do that!

Where's my pamphlets? It's time to start knocking on doors and licking stamps.
Are ordinances set in stone or can they be reevaluated, rewritten, revolted?

according to the article, it sounds to me that there can be amendments, tho once these things are written, i'm sure it is extremely hard to get the ordinances re-written. There would have to be overwhelming support. Being 80% of people DON'T smoke, try to find enough support to challenge. It would be tough. We do need to start handing out pamphlets and get better support about THR. This has been a difficult fight, and I'm sure it has just started. Are e-cigs included in the Eureka smoking ordinance?

On another note, I believe the CASAA listening session is Monday?? I wish them well!!!!!

There are a lot of people who don't smoke, who hate the smoke, but are just as livid about rights being squashed as the smokers are, they know they're next. Wherever a sin tax can be raised, somebody is next. Focusing on the sneaky way this was handled, will help,

Today the time stamp reads 2010 lol, but its recent article.
Wait... The comments saym2010 now too, except mine. Mine says 2013".

Someday, there will be a movement to ban smoking anywhere inside city limits
including private homes. Smoking will be permitted outside cities in the country.
However, smoking would not be permitted within 2 miles of the nearest cow.

We really need to quit giving them ideas.

LOL! Seriously, though, just in case some folks think we ARE giving them ideas, this was actually the ANTZ plan all along. Way back when they were lobbying for required separate smoking/non-smoking sections the slippery slope point was brought up that they'd do the sections first and next thing we knew people wouldn't be able to smoke anywhere. The ANTZ said those people claiming that were tin hat conspiracy nuts and there was NO slippery slope. It took them nearly 30 years, but here we are where cities are banning outdoor smoking, smoking in private residences and even using SMOKE-FREE products like snus.

So, when we try to warn people that these smoking bans are a slippery slope to other nanny bans (they want to tackle the obesity "epidemic" now, so salt, sugar, fat, junk food, happy meal toys) and they say we are conspiracy theorists, just remind them that the ANTZ claimed ALL they wanted was separate areas at first and now they claim a whiff of smoke even on a windy beach will cause people to drop dead of heart attacks.

They may be right. After all, clenching ones buttocks perpetually over very long periods of time might cause stress on the cardiovascular system. :D
