I'm in a similar situation with the Protank menagerie. A mix of stock and replacement bases from different sources. Accordingly different performance. Point made I believe is just that – the performance of individual parts like the base can make the difference.
[Curious, does the Tatroe base you mention use the old eVod threading?)
I mixed the bases between the tanks and no way of telling, no way to backtrack. Not uniform. They should be interchangeable; and, they are not, realistically. Without going to far afield here, this is about parts (now performance). These tanks have a generic sweet-spot. I believe one lies around 6.4W. Another around 8. The factory design I believe calls for 34 or 33g wire. I use nothing smaller than 32g. The parts and replacements are important. They change the output I think appreciably. For example, too much stretch in the O-rings and they pop right out of their minute groove at the interior of the base platform and end up a bow-tie around the coil cup blocking the wick ends.
You'll know it if it happens. You'll be sucking a Wendy's milkshake of hot dry air. LOL [but not so funny].
I've been building a table of coil build results similar to some posted on the microcoil threads. My purpose hasn't been to find the extremes, although it's inevitable, but to help find the sweet-spots for this device. So far, to my liking I've gotten very good results from the stock tank and var. devices I've used with...
32AWG, 6/5 1.75mm i.d. (2mm Sil.), tight, loose contact = 2.2Ω Great vape! Dial 3.6V, 5.5W to start (all the way out to end of green band.
Better wicking with Ekowool (solid 2mm) and ok with 1/16 Nextel hollow-pair. Paired with and without flavor wicks. All kinds. Also cotton in several varieties as overlays to the coil including amazingly a denier of sterile dental gauze much like cheesecloth (gunks up coil fast with heavy juices but awesome intense flavor). Same thing for organic candle wick.
Good clouds of good savory cool vapor — no one coil can, I don't think. It's rather a phenomena that occurs sometimes during the course of the life of a coil or build. Sometimes it just happens and the Protank sings no matter what you do (great ambient conditions) and it lasts for ever. At others it's an explosion and you know something exceptional is happening. You're in vape heaven. You pray it lasts. It's elusive. Like the quality of the ride in your car as the tank empties. There is a better for sure. For your car. For your tastes. One thing is certain, this is certainly not a refined technology. No way nears.
For me, I'm seeing the stupid silicone O-ring can really throw things off. And I think you're on to something with the Tatroe base thing. We do agree on one thing. The Sun Vapers O-ring is an improvement for both bases.
Appreciate the feedback. I'll look into the difference in bases. But I've got a half dozen RBA/RDA's begging me to move on.
Have a great day.
