Since PG is used in almost all DIY formats, I wanted to chime in about costs, laws, and other interesting tidbits I garnered today.
First, though it is used for cows, I learned that for usage on bovines, in the state of Florida, its supposedly a 'vet prescription only' item. Feed Depot (our big farm supply store) keeps it in the back and won't cough it up without a vet prescription. I tried 3 different ones, going in calmly looking through horse/cattle areas for it, then asking politely. I also tried another mom-n-pop feed store, and got the same response there.
So, meandered on over to the local smoke shop. They ONLY carry the 50/50 mix. I picked up a few cigars while I was there (its poker night Friday, and we are playing at the house where cigars are allowed), and the story they gave is that Florida law doesn't allow it to be sold straight. I figured this was BS, but tried 2 more, and same line given to me.
Next up, CVS. The guy at the counter said I had to speak to the pharmacist himself, and come back tomorrow, so I went to another one. This one the pharmacist was in, thankfully. He checked, then asked what use it was for. I told him I'm helping a friend for his farm, and that it's for the cows. He got inquisitive, so I told him that the vet said my friend's cows had 'neko-so-to-something' and that he was supposed to add the stuff to the feed, but that the feed store was out. He asked why I came there instead, I said cooly that the feed depot guy gave word that their supplier was out and they couldn't order it for a month. He seemed happy with the explanation, and threw in 'learn something new every day'. He had a bottle handy, but said he couldn't sell it, that they draw off it for nebulizer refills... but that he could order it.
I was told it ships from their compounding lab across town, and it'll be here tomorrow. Price was kinda steep ($45/gal compared to others who get it in farm stores in NYS for $20/gal) however, the pint he showed me had a quality that I didn't see at the feed store (since one feed store guy at least showed me the bottle to confirm that was it), it was colorless and absolutely crystal-clear. The pharmacist's bottle stated 99.9990% whereas the feed store was 99.4%. The feed store's liquid was a bit white, and noticeably occluded.
So there's my little trial and error and how I got it ordered, along with some tips for others.
A few notes:
1) As per trying the 'its for the cows' routine, though I knew enough to play stupid, I didn't offer any information without getting asked.
2) I grew up next door neighbor to a guy with 10 head of cattle and 50 head of horses, and frequently helped him out in exchange for 'paying a 10 year old to shovel manure' wages.. so I have a bit of a grasp on lingo and lifestyle
3) I drive a truck
4) I'm always wearing jeans and work boots
5) I sprayed a water hose in a dirt patch in the yard and walked around in it a bit before I went searching, so I'd have an authentic appearance
6) I hit up feed stores in the areas around Tampa, where it quickly goes from suburban to cows
Next time, my name will be on file at CVS, and repeat orders are always easier than initial orders.
Much easier than a time, back in the day, when I picked up actual film-and-dark-room as a hobby to get access to certain chemicals that are heavily regulated except to hobbyist photographers who use them as a primary means of developing black and white prints...
