Thanks Buddy! True, I am Jewish from both parents sides. But we never celebrated Hanukah. I tell people my mother was Jewcopalian, as she loved Christmas and we had a tree and Santa came with the presents. It's just not a Religious holiday to us. Unless one believes commercialization is a Religion!

I do belong to the commercialization church. One of the stupidest days is Memorial day and the Memorial day sale. I have yet to see any of the departed heroes making any purchases on that day. I remember a parade and memorial to those who gave their lives and not a store open to make money. Times have changed.

Couldn't have said it better. Memorial Day should be spent in reflection. Not celebration.

A combination of the two would probably work best in most cases. Memorial Day is to honor those who lost their lives in the service of our country which somehow doesn't seem like a celebration to me. Maybe I'm different. I'd be willing to wager that if you surveyed college students you would find less than half of them know what Memorial Day is beyond a long weekend to be used for partying. Nothing wrong with that but it would be nice if some portion of their day is spent in remembering those who gave their lives for us. I know I'll spend my morning and perhaps a little beyond in reflection. My admiration for the people we remember on Memorial Day is unsurpassed.
Just for the record, we have lost 635,000 of our finest Americans in service of our country since World War 1 (aprox the same number that we lost prior to WW1 that included the civil war). I often think of the unrealized families we never got to know.
