Oh How I Hate APO Shipping!!!

California is the hub for AP.. The pacific side of the world

Before it all got reorganized, the hub in California was FPO (Fleet Post Office). The hub for APO was New York. That's all old stuff now.

The Joint Military Postal Activity is located in Chicago. They are the liaison to the USPS International Service Centers located in Chicago, San Francisco, Honolulu, New York City, Jersey City, and Miami.

I'm stationed on Guam and it usually takes around 2 weeks to get most things. IT sucks since when you see the tracking it will move from the east coast to LA super quick, then after that it has to sit in hawaii and when it eventually hits Guam it sits in the military post office another 3 days or so before it hits our box.

I was stationed at Anderson AFB in Guam in 1975. Our APO was San Francisco. Took 10-14 days back then also.

2 weeks? I could be wrong but I don't think I've seen one take longer than a week to get to the sandbox. Maybe Guam isn't a regular stop?

APO shipping can be a real PITA but just think if we didn't have it and had to ship on the economy / local national route? Now that would really suck.

I think the point of this thread is a place for all of us folks that currently do, or previously did utilize APO/FPO mail system to have a thread to gripe a little bit. I'm sure none of us are truly ungrateful to have this service available to us.

Having said that... Thank you, all my brothers and sisters out there that volunteer to handle the mail for us, whether you are a seasonal voulunteer for the holiday push, on special duty for some time, or its a permanent job!

You are correct Borescoped, that and to keep the people around us from having to here us say "Damn no mail, were is my package!" LOL. Life would suck sooooooo much with out the APO/FPO system, just imagine if we all had to completely rely on the BX/PX I just wish sometimes it was faster but that cost money and we all know the military doesn't have any to spare.

Be careful ordering anything related to e-cigs when you are in Bahrain. I got a Lavatube kit confiscated by Bahraini Customs. They sent a letter stating my package was confiscated due to contraband items. At least it was only a $50 Lavatube and not a $200 Provari though!

Did they say what part was contraband? It sounds like local customs, have you tried asking the US customs about it?

Thanks for the info. I am in Bahrain also but have yet to have anything confiscated though. I just got a Billet Box this past week. I guess since it didn't "look" like an e-cig it made it past the Bahraini Customs. I have some juice enroute hopefully it makes it ok.

Bahrain should be the least of your problems. I spent 4 glorious years at ASU in Bahrain. It was all sweet tea and cakes on the patio. If you didn't include the marine riots in the Desert Dome or the transients taking a plunge off the roof of the Manama Towers.

Sorry for the late reply guys, but what i got instead of my lava tube was a letter from the USPS stating that my package has been confiscated due to contraband items. In the section where they check off which item was contraband...i.e ammo, porn, alcohol, the checked the etc boxed and wrote in e-cigarette. The next week my command had a note in the POD that said if receiving lithium ion batteries then they must be installed in the device, and not shipped separately. So it could be a combination of both that caused my package to be flagged.

I hate APO shipping! I've had so many things go through Richmond, CA which is a damn blackhole for mail. When stuff hits Richmond, it sits in a container until it fills, then ships by boat. I've had things sit there for 45-60 days until it get shipped to me. Very annoying.

ive lost two or three packages and had one severely damaged. it seems as if something hits CENTCOM, its anybody's guess where it goes.

I'm stationed in Guam as well. Currently I am deployed and seem to get stuff faster here than at home. How does that make any sense?
