I'll put in my two pennies. I still love the smell of a freshly-lit cigarette, as I always have. It's one of the strongest olfactory memories I have of my childhood, and I hope I can always appreciate it. Pipe smoke also still smells good.
It's the "aftermath" smell that bothers the crap out of me now. A lot like a good hearty coffee's transformation from delicious to offensive, cigarette smoke loses all of it "full" notes and becomes acrid when it sits on a person for any period of time. What was sweet turns sour. This only applies to full flavor cigarettes, for me. Light cigarettes are usually acrid and sour from ignition to the end, and ten times worse when the smell sits.
The worst part of it is knowing that I smelled like that. I probably stunk up entire floors of buildings when I walked through. I really feel like I should apologize to my non-smoking colleagues for doing that to them.
With that said, I still allow my friends to smoke in my house, but I can smell the d*mn things all over for at least 24 hours. I will never ever "call out" a smoker for smelling like smoke. I can make the choice to not be around them if it bothers me that much. That's an easy choice to make. I know exactly how hard it is to make the choice not to smoke anymore, though, and I'd be a hypocrite for being mean to a person that hasn't yet found what will get them off cigarettes.
I will, however, show them my electronic cigarette... and I might even mention the smell being one my main motivators for switching. There are enough other benefits to discuss, though, without having to embarrass anyone.
