ok so all of us know that flavoring that contain oil are insoluble in water and are supposed to not be good for our attys. there are two flavors out there that are quite popular but if we attempt them ourselves (diy) every extract that we'd use for flavor base contains the 'natural oil of…"; the two flavors i'm thinking of are licorice (anise) and clove. i've searched far and wide and in my experience you cannot get these two flavors 'oil free'.

so has anyone run into a place that would have either one of these flavors without the freaking oil? does it actually exist? do the premixed cloves and licorice have oil in them then? any info/input would be nice – thanks ahead of time.

i'll have to get my hands on some more clove juice (its so good i vaped 10ml in less than a week). some of the anise and clove bases i've found claim to be over 80% alcohol; i wonder if those would be considered 'safer'. there's also the 'bottom of a cola can' burn test. i just wanted to throw the topic out there to see if there are any alternatives before i burn some cash on my targeted bases; being unemployed and not able to make ends-meet my curiosity is starting to overtake and i'm just jonesing to mix some new flavors.

thanks for the input!

After seeing this thread:

It occurred to me that you could try to contact them to see if they would consider eventually making the flavors you want, since they might be popular. If they can be made with a water-base, they'll know how.

I have already talked to Linda and she recommend Eugenol, this is what I use, along with a mix of 2 parts clove and 1 part anise.
My mix is 3 drops Eugenol + 2 drops clove anise mix to 10ml ejuice.
Perfect to me!

I haven't tried this place, I have just been shopping around. They seem to have decent prices and I DID ask them if their candy flavoring oils were water soluble and they said YES! So you might want to give them a try.

I think the Lorann's black licorice did not have oil in it (I could be wrong though but I think it doesn't), that would be an anise flavor....

So is the oil just a problem for atomizers or is it actually supposed to be unhealthy ? It gets really confusing when you start looking at the opinions of the people who use those big vaporizers. They talk about using essential oils all the time but I have seen here that it's bad for you. So I'm just confused....there is a couple flavors I would love to try like rose, violet and other flowers and maybe even herbs but ???? Anyone know or ever tried using essential oils or herbals ?

Some premade flavors are made with oils, but those, like mints, generally use very small quantities compared to water-soluble flavors, like vanilla. Some oils, like cinnamon and clove, are known lung irritants, so I avoid those. YMMV, and some really love cinnamon or clove and have no problems.

Oils per se are not "bad", although some flavors are irritating, but their water solubility is not the issue, its their chemical structure. Oils will tend to linger in attys, though. Most people that use menthol or peppermint will dedicate and atty/cart for those flavors.

In DIY, while most of my flavors are about 10% the volume of the juice, peppermint is maybe 1%, if that. They tend to be much stronger. A 10% mint juice will knock your socks off...not unsafe, but way too strong.

Vendors make all flavors to a level that seems right to them. That said, some flavors are irritating on the throat and lungs, and it varies from person to person. I cannot vape Capella Chocolate Toffee, as it makes me cough a lot. If it makes you cough a lot or makes your throat scratchy, I would avoid that flavor.

I use oils all the time. Some people believe that oils are bad. Others don't. When I use them, I add a bit of vodka to help them emulsify as was previously recommended. If you think they are bad... don't use them. Otherwise use them as you wish! They are very strong so you don't need much at all.

I know oils are used in some commercial liquids. I haven't had any problem with any of my atties from oils. You really do need VERY little.

I just tried using some Lorannes Chocolate Flavoring oil along with vodka and it was just awful....maybe I used too much oil but it was so bitter. I am starting to think that at least for me...sweetness might have alot to do with my perception of rather the taste is pleasant or not. In other words if it smells good and the way I expect it to and it is sweet then I am happy with it. Does anyone else have this thought ?

So Guineahill....would you mind sharing your technique or have you posted any recipes elsewhere that I could look at ?

What about stevia ??? Anyone using it or have an opinion on it ?
