Ok, I'm trying to figure this out with cartridge/liquid...

There's filler material inside the cartridge.

You may be talking about cartomizers (cartridge/atty combined). They are disposable and do need to be replaced. They can be filled many times and last quite awhile. Some even wash them. But they are considered disposable.

With a cartridge, you may just need to replace the filler material from time to time. Or the atomizer.

Like swedishfish said, it's more important to replace the filler material than the cartridge itself (if it's just a cartridge and not a cartomizer). If you decide to go with cartridges, I suggest looking into some extra filler to replace... though I'm sorry that even though that's my recommendation I don't really know a great place to purchase any. You could get some pre-cut blue foam from strictlyejuice.com, but I also agree with swedishfish that I really don't like cartridges. Look into cartomizers, or if you really want to do the three piece battery-atomizer-cartridge route, I really strongly suggest you buy an extra bottle of juice and a drip tip. Even if you don't go that route immediately, at least you'll have the supplies on hand when you (possibly inevitably) come to the conclusion that cartridges are really pretty awful and want to either drip or go to cartomizers.

Don't be like me and sit on the fence too long- Order! It's the best thing you'll ever do for yourself. I read here forever. Should have done it sooner but I'm still glad I did.

Totally agree with swedishfish about sitting and reading... I found it a lot easier to figure out with something in my hand to look at while I was learning....

The cart itself should last a very long time without doing much to it. The filler should be replaced whenever it loses its shape, gets gunked up and can't be rinsed out anymore or starts looking like it has little pills on the top. I'm like swedish and I use cartos. They're just easier and more convenient for me.

All parts of the e-cig except the liquid are mechanical, and therefore breakdown. The batteries will eventually die, but they should last a long time before they do. Attomizers or the atty in cartomizers will quit working at some point. This can happen at any point from dead on arrival to many weeks before they quit working. The filler used in carts can be reused and then replaced. The filler in cartomizers will become too "tight" at some point(again from DOA to many weeks), and just not enhancing to the vaping experience. The can be cleaned and reused. Personally, I use cartomizers, and I do toss them when I am no longer enjoying them.

Vaping does have a learning curve, but to begin, it is relatively easy. Many people here can help you as soon as you open the box or even before when you are deciding on your original order.

And remember that cigarettes also have a very limited life (in minutes).

Best wishes, and ask any questions you have.

YouTube may be your friend here, or maybe the video review section here.

I'm sure there must be scads of videos where you can see someone filling a cart and/or carto and then vaping on it.

Maybe the best way to get your answer is to see someone actually doing it.

Look up 'refilling cartos', 'refilling carts', 'vaping basics', etc., a few hours of watching different videos I would think would go a long way to solving your confusion.

Also, there's no substitute for simply buying a decent PV and trying it yourself.

Welcome!

As Ms. Fish pointed out there is a difference between cartridges and cartomizers. You have the basic concept correct: With cartridges you just pop them out and add more liquid as needed. They don't need to be replaced. These are referred to as three piece systems. You have a battery, the atomizer with turns the liquids to vapor, and the cartridge that holds your liquid.

Using a cartomizer reduces that to two pieces. Still the battery, but the atomizer and cartridge is combined into a single unit. The atomizers in those tend to burn out/wear out relatively quickly compared to the separate atomizer in a three piece system. You have to replace the entire cartomizer if the atomizer inside it burns out.

As somebody who still considers himself to be a noob, for your very first venture I would suggest keeping it simple and going with the cartridges. The way you get liquid into a cartridge and a cartomizer is very different. You will have enough to figure out to begin with even with the basic cartridges. And you can always move to cartomzers later - and quickly if you want to. The basic trade off is: Cartridges are simpler to fill for new users, but they don't hold as much liquid as a cartomizer.

Ask away! That's what everybody is here for!

Ok, so I guess I'll start out with the cartridges if they're easier to use at first.

So if I get a Joye 510 with atomizer+cartridges... I can just eventually replace the cartridge+atomizer with a cartomizer without a new device, correct?

And I add e-liquid to the cartridges and cartomizer, no matter what I'm using they both take the liquid, correct?

Yes. Anything that says it's for the 510 will fit and they all take any e-juice you want.

Hi STLsport and welcome. There is two main systems for vaping. One is three piece using a battery, an atomizer, and a cartridge, and the other is two piece using a battery and a cartomizer (combined filler and atomizer). Both systems have their problems, and there has been quite a bit of development trying to address those problems. To cut to the chase, I recommend taking a hard look at the slb kgo with duel coil cartomizers. It's a little more money, but it's a high performance system that's getting very good reviews. Yup and yup - you're getting it. You can swap between using an atomizer with a cart, or taking that out and using a cartomizer.

With the cartridges you can just take the filler material out of the end, rinse it out & dry it, and pop it back in if you want to change flavors. You can't easily do that with cartomizers. So cartridges are a good newbie place to start - you have to figure out what flavors you like or not.

Joye 510 is also a good place to start. The "510" means you can use parts that are compatible with 510 threading. There are many options open to you with a Joye 510 kit - including the cartomizers.

For me, it seemed daunting but it was relatively easy to narrow down my first hardware purchase decision. Figuring out the next part: what flavor liquids to try and the nicotine strengths to get took more time to decide.

But feel free to ask away!

Well, thanks for the help. I just took the plunge. ( Joye 510 PCC Kit - Electronic Cigarettes Starter kit Joye 510 Portable Pack )

I ordered my Joye 510 starter kit. I'm going with the 3 piece- I'm starting out with cartridges.

I ordered the color that looks like a real cig (gotta keep my street cred up), wall/usb charger, 5 cartridges.

I held off on ordering any liquid. There's a local manufacturer in my area (Ozark Fresh Home Page) that supposedly makes some pretty respectable liquid. I'll be getting the 24mg. I figured I can save on shipping costs.

I hope this works out. I like my lungs and health, but I just like nicotine a little more.

The PCC kit was an excellent choice for a first kit - no worries about recharging while you are out and about.

And having a liquids supplier right near by? Doesn't get much better than that!

Best of luck with it. And drop in if you have more questions when you start using it.

Even if you don't go that route immediately, at least you'll have the supplies on hand when you (possibly inevitably) come to the conclusion that cartridges are really pretty awful and want to either drip or go to cartomizers.

Or, the OP may never come to that conclusion. There are many of us that think cartomizers taste awful, are too expensive, and are too restrictive when one wants to change flavors. Well meaning people here had me spending a ton of money on cartomizers when I first started vaping. IMHO, cartomizers have an off putting flavor. It's no one's fault, really. More, it's just different strokes for different folks. To automatically tell new vapers that they will hate cartridges plus atomizers does the new vaper a disservice. IMHO. YMMV.

I exclusively use cartridges plus an atomizer. For my tastes, a cartridge allows me to use clean filler every day (whereas a cartomizer can not be taken apart to be cleaned.)

I have been using cartridges for months by cleaning and inserting clean filler in them daily. My total bill for cartridges and filler for the last 6 months is less than $10. I have spent an additional $20 on atomizers. I doubt a cartomizer user could make the same $$$ claim for 6 months of daily usage.

OP, you probably need to try both to see which set up you prefer. If you just purchase one cartomizer and one atomizer plus cartridge to use on the top of whatever battery you select, you'll know almost right away which set up is the right one for you.

For me, I like being able to start with a fully clean fresh filler in my cartridges every day. For me, the flavors are more pure, the equipment more sanitary, and the vape more pleasant when using a 3 piece set up. (Battery, atomizer, plus cartridge.)

Best of luck! :)
