Hello, All!

Long time no post. :) Hubby has been vaping for a few weeks now, on and off. He's not totally off of analogs, but he thinks he's getting there. The one thing that is annoying him about vaping is that it makes his throat hurt. He's been vaping Halo Menthol Ice on a 510 with a Boge carto. Is it too much "throat hit?" Should he go to a milder juice? Is it a reaction to one of the ingredients? I think if we could get past the throat issue, he'd be able to kick the analogs for good.

Any thoughts or hints are greatly appreciated.

When I first began the switch to a pv, I had a sore throat for about a week. Finally realized it was post nasal drip. Probably from reducing the analogs, my sinuses were really clogged up. So I just used saline nasal spray each time I walked past the bottle on the counter for three or four days. It cleared the sinuses, got rid of the post nasal drip, and the sore throat went away.
Best of luck to your hubby.

Good to hear from you Barb!

I found this in the health section-

V1. Dry Throat, Sore Throat
Tobacco withdrawal produces a sore throat in some people. It is unknown why this occurs but perhaps cigarette smoke ingredients have some sort of preventative or anaesthetic effect, and stop the throat becoming sore during cigarette use, which it is easy to see could cause it.

Some - but by no means all - suffer from a dry throat, or even a sore throat, when starting to use an e-cigarette due to the drying-out effect of PG.

If a person suffers from both conditions: the tobacco withdrawal sore throat, and the e-cigarette new-user sore throat, then in rare cases a fiercely sore throat can result.

PG is a humectant (attracts, ie 'sucks out' water) and when vaping the back of the throat gets coated. You can find that after sleeping, you wake up with a sore throat. Things that can help are drinking a glass of water before bed, gargling with a mouthwash to cut the PG coating before bed, drinking water throughout the day, using hard candies and drinking liquids with honey liquid through the day to keep your mouth moist - especially if you are a new user.

An alternative for those who experience more throat dryness than normal is to change to a VG-based e-liquid, which normally solves the problem.

If it is post nasal drip look into products such as the neti pot or saline spray that will keep it moist and keep his throat from being raw. I know when I quit smoking the 1st time I got that bad and almost everytime I get a bad sinus infection. You can get a sinus rinse bottle kit at CVS pretty cheap and it helps a lot.

Something that happens to me from time to time if I'm not paying attention is that nicquid pops from the cartomizer into my mouth or the back of my throat. This can happen when I overfill the cartomizer or it otherwise becomes "flooded", or if I vape "too hot" (higher voltage, or in his case with a battery fresh off the charger). Sometimes I don't notice it, other times it can feel just like a little drop of liquid hits the back of the throat. In any event, when that happens I usually get sore-throat-like symptoms for while, most likely from the direct exposure to either nicotine or PG.

Another thing that can cause a sore throat symptom for me is an "off" draw -- meaning, that it takes too much (or even too little) force to take a draw from the cartomizer. As smokers we spent years or decades being used to the way we took a draw from a cigarette; when first going into vaping, we usually find that the experience isn't identical and that we are either working too hard at it or just need to get used to the difference. Either way I think some of as beginners work our draw in such a way that the throat gets exercised in new ways, which might contribute to an uncomfortable tightness until we find the right combination of equipment or technique (or, again, just get used to it).

In any event, frequent hydration it critical in the first few months, as is proper oral hygiene (it was surprising how the normal taste of or in my mouth changed over the first three months or so) and the realization that that despite the temporary changes and setbacks, you are really doing yourself the grandest of favors by sticking to it.

Hope this helps!

Nicotine is a skin irritant. Even the Patch has skin irritation warnings. The more nicotine, the more chance of irritation. The closer to 100% PG the base is, the more nicotine irritation, hit and flavor get through. Halo does not list their PG/VG but I believe they have at least some VG. Having some VG in the juices dulls irritation, flavor, hit and adds nicer vapor. But VG is thick and too much VG can make a liquid hard to use in cartomizers. I recommend 20%, 30% if 20% isn't enough.

Strong menthol can be irritating. Maybe he needs to switch to a less intense menthol or alternate vaping the menthol and something smoother.

Vaping is drying. Vapers need to dry fluids and stay hydrated. Dry membranes are more likely to get irritated.

Yes I drink lots of water. I vape 12mg and yes mainly pg. Possibly its the pg????

I'll see what happens over the weekend with the blood and see doctor on Monday if it doesn't stop. One thing is for sure I will not be vaping alot today.

the high PG could be doing it, PG dries out the membranes, if you vape a lot before bed, and don't drink it could be the cause of the issue. not sure so don't quote me on that, the blood would concern me as well, you should post on the health section and keep us updated.
