wouldn't you recommend juul?
juul is fine but I would recommend getting a pod designed for refilling, closed systems can be as pricey as cigs. Open system pods let you refill the juice of your choice plus there are better pods on the market. Too many actually, most sites clearance sections are full of pod devices at steep discounts. Maybe pickup a couple different ones to try.

it seems as though by the time i find something right for me, i might have spent 3 or 4 hundred. but if it gets me off cigs, it will be so worth it

Compared to the cig cost it's nothing, it's an investment in your health. Good luck!

I've been vaping for 5 years and while there is some small expense in buying a couple different product to see what suits you best, it's still a cost savings in the long run.

I've likely not spent on vaping in 5 years what I would spend on smoking for one, and that includes factoring in consumables like e-juice and coils..

So don't worry so much about upfront cost.

I think the Pico mod, the one that takes 25mm tanks would do best for you to start with because its the most versatile and dependable.

wouldn't you recommend juul?
No, if only based on principles. Because they are now Big Tobacco (partially owned by Altria/Phillip Morris) and betrayed our vaping community. Because they catered to advertizing to youth we now have "the youth vaping epidemic". (Mine and others opinion.) Kids don't call it vaping, they call it "Juuling".

Pods are ok to start on, but there are other pod devices similar to JUUL.

Hi and welcome to the ECF.

If you shop well and make informed choices, that $300-$400 could be your total for a year or more of vaping.

Please add your location to your profile.

You would not have liked that mod/tank that you mentioned! It's what known as a "cloud chaser". You want more of a MTL (mouth to lung) or even restricted DTL (direct to lung) Don't worry there is some lingo to learn... we will help. There are many refillable "pods" or AIO (all in one) They would be better for a starter, but my choice would be a Geekvape Frenzy:
You are being redirected...
Great deal on that one (I'm a bargain hunter!)
Here's a crazy good deal on e-juice:
Welcome Sample Pack - 4 Bottle Bonanza Extravaganza
Use the code and it's less than $5 including shipping!
That will get you going for very little investment (make sure and also get a 5 pack of extra coils!)
Then you can shop around for a real "mod" and tank. You tube reviews are very helpful. I suggest a mod that uses single 18650 battery, and get 2 batteries and a charger... you will have extra charged battery ready to go. Don't get batteries or coils from e-bay!
Many vape shops will try to talk you into a "cloud chaser" and charge way too much (for juice too) I got a mod for $10 and a tank for $10... also 5 pack of coils for $4 ($100 can go a long way if you are patient)
I almost forgot... welcome and congrats on your pursuit to quit cigs! It won't be easy! Try 18mg nicotine at first (or 25mg "salts"... don't get caught up in the slats thing, most devices can use either) I like juice that is 65VG/35PG. Some "pods" do well with 50/50 and if you do get a DTL type maybe 70VG/30PG (more VG = thicker, more PG = thinner) I know this is a lot to absorb, that's why I say get something smaller for now, then shop around. Peace out, vape on!

A current pod system with a solid review:

https://www.myvaporstore.com/Innokin-JEM-Pen-Kit-p/ink-jem10.htm

(I'd get two, so you have one to use while the other is charging)

Pick up a spare set of coils:
Replacement Innokin Goby Coil Atomizer Heads

Pick up some eliquid that is called 18mg/ml or 24mg/ml strength, preferably called 50/50 PG/VG.

Are you a menthol smoker or regular tobacco? A lot of us end up with flavored eliquid, but starting with tobacco or menthol may be simplest.

(I'm not up on commercial eliquid, been mixing my own for years.)

Welcome Aboard

I would suggest starting one of the following:

Pods
I would go with the Aspire Breeze NXT
Mods With Tanks
Innokin Adept - Best MTL Kit out there imo
OBS Cube Series any of them
Geek Vape Aegis Series any of them

No I won't recommend Juul it's even hard to type that name

No. I would buy a basic, _real_ setup, whose individual components are applicable to further growth, as I suggested. My list there can be had for <$125 shipped and you're good to go for a couple months. FYI, what you're ultimately trying to do is mimic aspects of a cig experience. Draw resistance, back of throat punch and lung expansion. It's a bit of a learning curve and a Pico is a relatively advanced training ground. Further, it's small and light enough where you can carry it in your pocket.

Here was stage two of my development a couple years or so ago with... wait for it... a Pico. I'd just learned to build coils and treated myself to a better tank - which made it even smaller in size.
