I've been told that we have 4 basic taste and they are: sweet, sour, bitter, salty, and umami. I've also learned that our
sense of taste is not only harmed by smoking, but age as well. So while we, as former smokers will regain most of our
sense of taste, we'll never be able to taste as much as before we smoked, for the simple reason that we naturally lose some of our ability to taste naturally. Interesting stuff!
(Further trivia: pregnant women's sense of smell and taste are heightened to protect the baby from food poisoning. A pregnant woman can smell when food has turned bad, no matter how slightly it is!)
