Sure i can go spend $30 on a Gerber knife that'll last a year or so but I spent over $100 on my Benchmade and it's been my daily carry for over 15 years and there's not a single nick in the blade edge.
Oh wow, I was a semi-dedicated collector of balisongs throughout my twenties, and this analogy never even occurred to me! I've got everything from a BM 72 that I paid $180 for to a cheap korean butterfly that I picked up for a twenty spot at the flea market. The differences in workmanship and quality are immediately apparent. Also, the korean bali will literally fly into pieces if you flip it for more than a couple of minutes without tightening the pin back down. The BM has performed flawlessly for years with only minor maintenance.
I recall much consternation on the Spyderco forums concerning Spyder and BM knives being so expensive compared to all the impostors on the market. I found my 72 at a local gun and knife show; and once I had held it, the price became irrelevant. The next thing I found myself holding was my wallet. There are a lot of striking similarities between the enthusiast knife market and the enthusiast mod market now that I think about it!
I'm satisfied with my clones, but it's a damn good thing I don't live in Greece or the Philippines, because I'd probably be completely broke by now.
