I'm a Heating Engineer and just used my Quick-Fire Torch.
Hmm, a tad too powerful methinks, legs fell off the coil with the heat...

I used a small propane torch and it works for me. I have even used those large bic lighters and they work as well.
Lighting the grill is when I miss mine the most. Living in the country, I just can't run to the corner store and grab one. It's a wonder I haven't burned down the house. I turn the stove on, get some newspaper, light the corner and run through the house to the patio. I always make a mental note to self to pick up a couple but we all know how well that works.
You too? Yeah I live way out in the woods as well and don't make it into town a hole lot. I do however, keep stocked up on the large lighters because I heat my home with firewood and so even though I don't smoke any longer I have plenty of large lighters as I need them.

I havent torched my coils since my first couple builds. Take a extra moment to get the initial wraps consistent, then fire em until they glow and give them a light squeeze.
Yeah, I don't torch my coils much anymore either. I simply use the battery on the mod to fire the coils and then squeeze them into shape while they are cooling.
+1 on not torching anymore. Did that in the early days of building after watching people on YouTube do it, then laziness took over and stopped. Just wrap, connect, and let the mod do the work. Of course, test it first for safety with an ohm meter before firing.
I use a butane pencil torch. Unless I get lazy and let the battery do the work.
IF you have charged batteries for your mod there is no reason to torch the coils..
Using a torch anneals the wire (if you heat the wire before you wind your coil), making it far easier to wind a tight coil. It's not a requirement but it sure works nicely. Everybody does things the way they're comfortable doing.
