Ordered to stop using my PV by my Doctor

:( :( :(

Hi, whilst smoking my pv late last night (i have a dse 901), i was taking a long draw and suddenly my chest felt like it had shut tight.
As i was unable to breath, i was taken to hospital where i was told that id had a severe bronchial attack (asthma attack). This was quite a surprise seeing as though ive never suffered from asthma.
As a result, my doctor has told me never to use my e cigarette again :(
She'd never heard of e cigarettes but was far from impressed with what id told her about them, so im not sure if that plays a part in her putting a ban on me using them.
Problem is, i still want to use my pv. I think what happened was maybe my own stupid fault, id taken far too long a puff . But im not sure whether to disobey my doctor, cant see her being pleased.
Last night did scare me, but part of me still wants to persevere with the pv. This is the first time id ever had any problems like this.

I was wondering if anyone has ever had any problems similar to mine, or if they'd ever disobeyed a doctor and continued to use one.

Many thanks x

While I hope you get better and sorry to hear about your attack. The one thing in your statement that drew my concern was the Dr. never heard of a E-Cig and as you say put a ban on you. Before you would go and disobey the Dr. which I do not think anyone should ever suggest and I am not, you should have a chat with this Dr. and ask that he or she does their research before making a final judgment. Now not being a Dr. myself, the Dr. may have a valiant reason for you to stop but as I said I would verify it with them first.

Well, at least for me, that's a first. Kind of funny too since I got a friend who still smokes and does breathing treatments and in the liquid meds there is PG.:confused:

You have to do what is best for you, but since you are still vaping, are you drinking LOTS of liquid?

If I had to guess, I'd say maybe an allergy.
Are you using PG? Maybe you should try VG.
The flavoring could be a problem too, I had tightness in the chest and little red round bumps in the mouth from using menthol crystals.

If you still continue to vape, I'd say tread lightly, and at the first signs of further problems, go see your doctor even if she disapproves.

While I too am not suggesting you disregard your doctor's instructions, the phys may have just been giving those instructions based on your immediate situation. If you had been holding a rabbit when you had the asthma attack, the phys would probably have told you not to pick up any rabbits.

Provide your physician with some credible information, including a list of ingredients compared with the ingredients of some asthma inhalers. Help educate your phys in a non-offensive way and you will be making a PRO-active move, where the phys original instructions might have been a RE-active response.

Also, is this your regular physician or an ER doctor you saw for the first time?

If you have another physician, check with them. Mine has had no objections to my PV use and has helped me encourage my husband.

good luck and take heart, I think you might be correct regarding the long, hard draw might have been too much.

Thanks, jimi mack.
Whilst it was very scary, i do feel it could have been my own doing. When smoking my pv i always draw the vapour down into my lungs, only this time id taken a much longer puff. (Ive learned not to do that again).

As i said, my doctor had never heard of e - cigarettes so i spent a little time explaining them and saying just how helpful they were. Only she didnt want to listen. All she would say is that i was to no longer use these devices, that there is plenty of help out there for people who wish to stop smoking, that i was to make an appointment with the nurse and go down the 'correct' path.
She simply wouldnt entertain any other view.
According to her, there is research to suggest that inhaling water vapour can cause such reactions.
I could try and politely ask her if she'd research e-cigs, tho doubt id get a favourable reply. Think i may go down the route of seeing another doctor.
As i sit here writing im smoking my e-cig and im perfectly fine. I have to admit i am a little scared of it now but want to try and give it a shot x

Please do talk to another Dr. It's your body and your life, no one should "forbid" you to do anything. With that said, if anything (including PV's) very likely caused me a hospital visit, I would refrain and research until I had sufficient answers.

I have seen 3 different doctors since I began vaping and have gotten OVERWHELMING support, and two asked for printed material to distribute to their other patients.

You are not inhaling water vapor, it's PG/VG vapor as the case may be. The sales pitch sounds good that way, but you are dealing with a potentially serious issue, keep it real.

If you are going to continue vaping no matter what your Dr. says , than I strongly suggest you switch to vaping 100% vg. While I am not one , there are many people that are allergic to PG. Some are worse than others and the symptoms range from simple throat irritation and red blotches to serious swelling of the throat and glands , shortness of breath and asthma attacks. There are quite a few members here that have the allergy that you could speak with to get some info on what's working for them and the first step is always getting away from PG! Good luck to you

First and foremost, I think you should ask your Dr. to explain why she feels so adamantly about it -- what is it specifically about vaping that she finds so objectionable or harmful? Is she concerned about vaping in general, or just your reaction to it? My nephew has a similar reaction to peanuts, but that doesn't mean that peanuts are inherently dangerous. I am in no way suggesting that you disregard her advice, but you should make sure you understand the reasons behind it.

Stephra and RollTheBones, the doctor whom i saw today was the emergency doctor at my local surgery. Ive seen her before but she isnt my regular doctor. So im going to try and make an appointment with my regular doctor, to explain my case better. The problems going to be, is whats already been written in my medical notes.
I find that a lot of medical professionals are against these things, where i live. If its not medically certified, then its an absolute no no.

I probably should point out that i smoke vg liquid rather than pg, as pg used to give me horrendous headaches.

Simplesins, i was a smoker of around 30+ cigarettes a day before starting to use my e-cig. Although i was always encouraged to quit, i was never told a definate 'do not' like i have been with the e-cig. It appears they would prefer i smoke.

Thank you for your comment jj2, im actually smoking liberty flights vg menthol. So maybe it could have something to do with the flavouring.

Thank you for your comment also bwood12043, i agree that it could have been a response to the immediate situation. Im going to try and see my regular doctor, take in my e-cig and some information as well as pointing them to this site. Hoping that will help.

Doots, the doctor has given me a prescription for an inhaler to use....

Thank you all for your help, i really appreciate it x

Well I'd hate to be faced with a similar situation myself, I feel your pain and I'm not trying to really defend your doctor but....you've heard the old joke "Doctor, it hurts when I do this."

To some extent, stopping the preceived cause of the event seems like just plain common sense until you find out more about what's really going on. Second opinion, you bet as well as maybe a few other tests.

I don't know if slamming the doctor when a patient comes in with a condition like this and explains it happened while taking a hard draw on e-cig. If I were a doctor I'm sure I would say the same thing no matter how hard the patient tried to rationlize it's use. In a certain sense, as was mentioned you might have had a reaction from pg in which case the doctor is correct.

I would still seek a 2nd opinion with a specialist that is familiar with e-cigs before vaping again.

While some doctors understand the lesser of 2 evils argument, most will never endorse breathing in any foreign substance into your lungs. Kinda makes sense

Glad to hear you are feeling better now.

Thanks everyone.

I may have just come up with a possible reason for the reaction ive had. As i said in one of my earlier posts, i now smoke vg because pv liquid used to give me horrendous headaches. Only yesterday, by mistake id refulled my cart with pv liquid, and this just happened to be around the time that id had my bronchial attack. (my son has kindly reminded me of this)
Im hoping its this, because if it is, i can carry on using my e-cig. As long as i make sure i stay well away from pv liquid x
