I can't for the life of me understand why "e-cigs" are being grouped together with cigarettes in all of these cases. It's hard to believe that somebody with the power to enact laws could be that ignorant. I'd love to watch a debate with the senator on WHY its banned, other than, you know, it looks like smoking.

It's damn near like saying bubblegum is banned because it can cause mouth cancer like chewing tobacco.

You have a group called Americans for Nonsmokers Rights to thank for the epidemic of legislators & public health departments believing that they can change the physical and chemical properties of vapor by calling it smoke.

Actually, they don't believe that, but it manages to convince a whole lot of ordinary folks to believe vapor is just as harmful as smoke.

Their "Model Ordinance" includes e-cigarettes in the definition of smoking: http://www.no-smoke.org/pdf/modelordinance.pdf

I blogged about this quite a while ago, and my efforts to have a logical discourse with those folks went nowhere.

Logical discourse? We dont need no logical discourse, when we have gut feelings and knee jerk reactions.

Please don't confuse us with the facts we have are minds made up.

That is exactly what it sounds like. It's appalling that this is the way laws and ordinances are/can be made today. Instead of education we have people just going off ignorant gut feelings which then cascades down to regular citizens.

PS - Your AV is the face I imagine them having as they make this crap up.

Lest see any nicotine use equals tobacco use.
So with that reasoning milk must equal cow manure.
So to get rid of manure we need to ban milk. Or vote out a nanny Governor.;)

All tobacco/nicotine use equals smoking. This ban not only ban e-cigs but smokeless tobacco, though I don't know how they are going to stop the use of snus or dissolvables.

Its just zealots with no connection to science or interest in public health.

Oregon Governor Kitzhaber bans all tobacco use (including e-cigarette use) on all state government building property, falsely claims "tobacco use" (instead of cigarette smoking) is most preventable cause of death in state.

Really, folks, it is simply time to just ignore and defy these laws. Smoke/vape if you got em.

That sounds precisely like what I'm experiencing in another part of my life that has distracted me from ECF for months.

And don't forget it has to be the FDA approved candy and gum.;)
THAT is the part that scares me. See the last post on the CUNY thread. They said something like "we will revisit this if the status of e-cigarettes changes" wrt the FDA.

It's utter nonsense, but I'm having trouble thinking of a response that doesn't sound whiny or lame. Because the way most folks think, that sounds like a totally reasonable response. I'm not sure I could explain what is wrong with that to my boss or any manager or businessperson if they weren't already on my side. Even with a scientist or engineer, I'd have to start with long paragraphs on harm reduction, but at least those folks (and lawyers and some others) are trained in logic, whereas I've never ONCE had logic carry ANY weight with the average person. It has to "sound right."

I'd venture to guess that the reason it has to "sound right" to the average person is a phenomenon called "cognitive dissonance". It's the feeling of discomfort you get when your brain is battling with conflicting messages. For the past 20 years or so, there has been a steadily growing propaganda campaign to demonize tobacco, tobacco companies, nicotine, and nicotine users.

When you start telling them that nicotine has beneficial effects and about using a smoke-free tobacco product to combat smoking, their brain is digging up stories they have been told that conflict with what you are saying. It is more comfortable for them to stick with the viewpoint they have always had.
