The affair between Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemmings, one of his slaves, has recently been supported by dna evidence. While the dna data leaves open the possibility that close relatives of Jefferson fathered Hemmings' children instead of Thomas, a study of other evidence by the foundation that manages Monticello confirmed it was Thomas. The key evidence is that the other potential fathers weren't at Monticello at the time of her conception, while the ex-president was.

Later on, during the 1884 presidential campaign, Grover Cleveland faced allegations that he had fathered an illegitimate son, and did an amazing thing, which helped him win the election. Basically, he admitted it, told the truth and took full responsibility, something we wish more politicians would do.

James Buchanan, the only bachelor president, never showed much interest in women. He was reportedly romantically linked to his close “friend” William Rufus King. They shared a home in Washington for 10 years from 1834 until 1844. The “roommates” often attended social functions together. King described their relationship as a “communion.” It was rumored that Andrew Jackson called the pair “Miss Nancy” and “Aunt Fancy.”

After King moved to France in 1844, Buchanan wrote a letter to Cornelia Roosevelt which read: “I am now ‘solitary and alone,’ having no companion in the house with me. I have gone a wooing to several gentlemen, but have not succeeded with any one of them.”

As a young officer, Dwight D. Eisenhower and his close friend Sereno Brett planned and launched a fake “Indian attack” in Wyoming.

He staged a fake argument about the trouble in the area (an area actually known for attacks), put blanks in the guns, handed them to the men, and then sneaked out during the night to shout war cries and stage false fronts. They only considered their prank a success once they got the sentry on duty to fire the shotgun at them, which they found endlessly hilarious. In the morning, the shaken-up young soldier almost sent a report requesting reinforcements, but Eisenhower stopped him before he could do so.

Nixon Was A Card Shark
While in the Navy, Richard Nixon noticed that his friends were winning money in poker games. Always the opportunist, Nixon had the best poker player in his unit teach him how to play the game. Within only a few months, Nixon had won around $6,000 in poker games, which he used to fund his first congressional campaign.

Before Andrew Jackson was president, he married a woman named Rachel Donelson in 1791. She had previously been married and believed that she was legally divorced. However, after marrying Jackson, Rachel found out this was not the case. Her first husband charged her with adultery. Jackson would have to wait until 1794 to legally marry Rachel. Even though this happened over thirty years previously, it was used against Jackson in the election of 1828. Jackson blamed Rachel's untimely death two months before he took office on these personal attacks against him and his wife. [about.com]

In 1795, George Washington approved of the Jay Treaty, attempting to normalize the still-volatile relations with Great Britain. In return for the pulling of British troops out of forts across the West and compensation for seized merchant ships, the British were given favored-nation trade status. The Jeffersonian party of Congress reacted violently to the treaty, favoring the French over the British. Thomas Jefferson repeatedly accused Washington of treason. [Deseret News]
