I got a couple friends who have had it done. One is recovering from one knee and in October has to have the other done.
I've helped her and the best advice is to do the exercises they give you BEFORE the surgery---no matter how much it hurts. And then do the same after.
And, a little personal advice, after it's all over, I'd do at least 20 minutes a day of weight bearing exercise. At least five out of seven days and a nice leisurely walk will do.

I was a ortho nurse too. lots of new hips and knees. Don't do more than one knee at time, or you won't have a leg to stand on. Do the exercises! It will hurt some. you will heal a lot faster and better if you do the exercises. Bone needs pressure to grow. Look at astronauts. They have jelly bones when they get back because they are not under gravity and their bones get weak fast. Same here on earth. Take the pain meds on schedual for them to work the most effectively. Ice really works wonders on the pain too. Best of luck to you!
