OK, with mmcall12, Morandir chatting away about them, and seeing K9luvr's nick..... I'm starting this thread:

Thank you all dog lovers! Especially those who rescue. I volunteer with a couple of rescues here in the Dallas area, and help fundraise for even more (one around here is called "Real Men Neuter").

My core pack consists of 3 dogs, but was 4 (actually closer to 6) until we lost our Jack Russell T. a few months ago. I have two foster dogs at the moment. One is a "Sharpei/Whippet/Rhodesian" mix, and I think Pitbull too, but we don't say that because potential adopters often cannot get apartment leases with that breed. We are getting dna testing done her just because we want to know. And tests on one of our core-pack members who looks like a miniature cattledog (rat-terrier/cattle-dog aka "rattle dog"). We were at the No More Homeless Pets conference in Vegas and one thing I learned in one of the seminars was that at least 80% of animals breed are mis-identified by shelter staff.... very little of their dna has any bearing on external appearance. It might have pitbull dna for appearance, with labrador DNA for temperment, and wolfhound DNA for digestion, etc etc.

Anyway, tell us about your dogs!

Plarkinjr have 3, two offical rescues, the other was a non shelter rescue. Two live with my parents because of Loki's injury and new the laws of the building on weight limits. Demon is a 75lbs black lab girl, Sovie a 135lbs lab/rot mix, and Loki the 44.9lbs "corgi mix" who looks more like a staffordshire bull terrier (smallest in the pitbull family, not to be confused with the american staffordshire terrier which is twice the size.).

All ours are rescues. The beagle was found tied to a light post at a major intersection.
The smallest and my least favorite (my wife loves her) is Bubbles the mini dachsund. She was a puppy mill mom and has nerve damage to her back end, so waste products just "appear" while she's sleeping. Plus she's demanding and prissy (won't pee outside if grass is damp). The two groups I work with most do a LOT of court-ordered seizures on illegal puppy mills / backyard breeder-horders.

We've been fostering for close to 4 years now, mostly medical or behavioral cases. My favorite (now deceased) dog was the Jack Russell of our core pack. She was a drill-sergeant to many of the fosters who lacked confidence. She'd bark in their ears and teach them clear dog-communication. They learned structure and normal dog behavior from her. She was too smart for her own good, and we faltered staying one step ahead of her.... she persisted at a flaw in the fence and escaped while we were at an animal rescue fundraiser event. Long story short, she was hit by a car, and animal control brought her to us.... we drove straight to doggy ER and decided it was best to not put her thru a long, and potentially ineffective recovery. She was badly mangled, but like a trooper, stood on her 3 good legs, and looked around with the good side of her head until we got to the ER. I miss her.

I have four dogs, all rescues. My 13 golden/Anatolian shepherd mix was found w/her 5siblings at 4 wks of age in an abandoned car. She was one of 3 that lived. She's been w/me since she was 8 weeks. My other 3 are 11 y.o. each. One is a sheltie found running int the streets of williamsburgq, had her since she was 2. Ziggy, my Keeshond, is a hurricane Katrina evacuee from Mississippi. His owners had to surrender him and his brother when they evacuated NO. Had ziggy since he was . Jazz is my papillon. She was a breeder in a puppy mill for 6 yrs before being rescued. It's sometimes a zoo around here.

we have 2 and 1/2 in our pack currently. Diesel was a boxer when we rescued him 6 yrs ago, after "under the table scraps" he is more of a wrestler at 80 lbs now, but he is our tub-o-goo. Next we have Dozer, an english mastiff we rescued from previous owners that beat him as a puppy makes me sad to think someone could hit him he is a verry sweet guy at around 160 lbs. and then there is Max, my wife's weiner dog, i lovingly refer to as "crack-head' weighing around 3-4 lbs.IMG00069-20110302-2201.jpg

One of our more difficult fosters was CLYDE. He came to us skin and bones, no fur from demodex mange. After we got him back to health, it was apparent we had a smallish Great Dane, but with red fur and a hint of a ridge-back. He was gorgeous, a sweetheart with our pack, and loved to lounge on the sofa with us. His issue though was a very aggressive sounding greeting to other dogs. Impossible to show on leash or in a crate at adoption events. Someone in Houston found him on Petfinder.com and brought their two Rhodie's up to Dallas for meet&greet. At the neutral ground of a neighbor's back yard, the 2 minute growl/bark intro turned into a romp and race play time. We drove Clyde down to Houston the following weekend and I hear he is doing well with his new family.

While he was with us, I had to go to ER with a bite wound - because I was a dumbass. Clyde realized his mistake and pulled out before he could do the damage I know he was capable of. And because he was not healthy enuff for rabies shot, he had spend 10 days in solitary. Had my wife not called EMTs (I passed out from shock; seeing your own meat and fat can do that), I woulda just taken care of it myself and saved everyone some grief. Oh well.

plarkinjr, glad I responded cuz the 2nd paragraph doesn't show up. I have all the respect in the world for people who foster. I couldn't do it because I'd just end up keeping them. I figure that I am contributing a small part by only adopting rescues. Thanx for all you and your wife do as foster mom & dad. ;-)

I recently learned that dachsunds are considered the most difficult to housetrain. Mr. Bean and the two I've had in my packs are testament to this. I often refer to Bubbles as "turd machine".

I know I shouldnt have favorites, but I do... luckily those who aren't, don't know it. ;)
