I'm sorry for the off topic post but this is important to the future of the internet in Canada. These corporations have earned billions of dollars in profit and now they want more this is nothing more then a huge money grab and to squash competition. For many Canadians their monthly bill will be increasing by 50% or more so please help and sign the petition.

Update:

From March 1 on, users of the up to 5 Mbps packages in Ontario can expect a usage cap of 25GB (60GB in Quebec), substantially down from the 200GB or unlimited deals TekSavvy was able to offer before the CRTC’s decision to impose usage based billing. Users who were on unlimited package rates will be returned to $31.95 capped rates although larger blocks of bandwidth can be purchased.*

Ontario and Quebec up to 5 Mbps users – with a monthly limit of 25GB and 60GB respectively: insurance Blocks Offered:
* $4.75 - 40GB extra usage * $9.50 - 80GB extra usage * $14.25 - 120GB extra usage (maximum 3 blocks)
* $55.00 – 275GB extra usage (maximum 240GB extra usage in Quebec)

Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are about to impose usage-based billing on YOU.

This means we're looking at a future where ISPs will charge per byte, the way they do with smart phones. If we allow this to happen Canadians will have no choice but to pay MUCH more for less Internet. Big Telecom companies are obviously trying to gouge consumers, control the Internet market, and ensure that consumers continue to subscribe to their television services.

These Big Telecom companies are forcing small competing ISPs to adopt the same pricing scheme, so that we have no choice but to pay these punitive fees.

This will crush innovative services, Canada's digital competitiveness, and your wallet.

We urgently need to send a clear message to Ottawa, saying that we won't stand by while some of the most profitable companies in the country indiscriminately add new fees to our Internet bills. Enough is enough.

its near impossible to live with all the new overhead that is required to be a "normal functioning member of society". Canada disgusts me, Im the sole provider for my family, my bell bill is close to 200$ a month. and it pains me to think of it going higher.

Acanac High Speed Internet. Low Cost DSL and VOIP Service - $24.95/month unlimited (add $5.00/month for dry DSL to rid bell)

Voip Services - Brama Telecom, VoIP Providers Canada, Internet Phone Service, Long Distance calling, telephone VoIP Providers. - $14.95/month unlimited VOIP phone

Save youself some money my friend..

Going to Acanac will not save you from UBB they are a Bhell reseller like Teksavvy.

For now it can.. Makes your petition all that much more important..

It was more a response to save teabagger and other paying $200 for all their Bell services which in many cases have capped internet access already.

Just signed the petition, with 3 computers in the house(The kids, wifes and mine) the prospect of UBB is scary, and potentially very expensive. Wife likes YouTube, kids like on-line content, I do some gaming and video streaming.

Seems like a trap really, first they sell you on insane speed, then they want to start charging you an arm and a leg.

The overage charges are insane, to put it into perspective Amazon charges $0.03 per gig and Netflix pays $0.025 per gig so how can Bhell justify charging $1.25 per gig.

What really pisses me off is Bhell did not provide any evidence of network congestion to get UBB passed. The CRTC is corrupt it's run by many ex telco and cableco employees how can the public get a fair ruling.

As much as I like to go "against the grain" on most things, I am trying to find out how this will impact most consumers. From what I can gather, this will impact mostly online gamers and those who illegally download movies.

Now, I am a Netflix user and was hit with an overage last month with Bell of a couple of bucks. I love video streaming too, and do a BUNCH of youtube browsing weekly, and my bandwidth doesn't go thiat high. It's Netflix that kills me.

I will probably err on the side of the user when all is said and done, but I'm used to internet paranoia, so need more info first.

Here is what Bhell wants to charge 3rd party resellers to bump speeds from 5Mb to 6Mb

If this is allowed to continue the caps will get smaller the overage charges will get larger. You like Netflix did you know that when Netflix announced they were coming to Canada 2 days later Rogers decreased their caps. If this allowed to continue soon you will be paying for every web page you visit or they will charge extra if you want to visit Netflix, Youtube etc... When you have most of the pipes in Canada controlled by companies that rebroadcast TV they don't want you using services like Netflix.
