Never much cared for concerts (have always hated crowds), but the best ones I (ahem) remember were:

Lou Reed (Richmond, 1984)
Bonnie Raitt (Charlottesville, 1982?)
Bob Dylan (Norfolk Scopes, 1979)

Was surprised at how many live perfomances kinda -- um, you know. Like Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse, the "Rust Never Sleeps" tour (I was expecting him to be awesome! NOPE.)

I would have given anything to see Dylan back then, wouldn't want to here him now (not to good )

Even tho i love music, I'm not a big concert goer cus there are too many*shudder* people there ;)
But Lalapalooza in 92 was great, saw Clapton around then, The Tubes in the early 80's I barely remember and Foghat and Rare Earth in the 70's were standouts. Oh yeah BB King and a few other Bluesmen were always a real treat!
saw John Kay of Steppenwolf too, he was awesome.
Man i guess I did go to a few! Just remembered some country bands I saw in the 70's too, but it's v e r y hazy :)

Saw Papa Roach on the Getting Away With Murder tour, Skindred opened for them. In a tiny venue (2 stories, totalling no more than 5000 sq. ft.), they put on a complete show, lights, pyro, theatrics. Absolutely amazing! Rob Zombie at another venue comparable in size. He was also spectacular. The energy in the room was just crippling!

Also saw Lewis Black with John Bowman as the opening act at the same venue as the Rob Zombie show. Met both comics after the show and had my ticket stub autographed. They were two incredibly nice people that have an incredible talent.

chemcat and snowdragon, i'm pretty jealous of those shows. wish i coulda seen all of those acts live.

i've seen some great live music though:

paul mccartney @ citifield

Phish. many times, but 3 particular highlights were the 3 day camping festivals in Limestone Maine and the one at Watkins Glen, NY (just 2 weeks ago), and a great show at Bethel Woods, NY, @ the site of woodstock.

The Who @ jones beach, when john entwistle was rocking

Flaming Lips, in Massachusetts, I can't remember the venue. Wild, absolutely wild. You could be sober as a nun, and you'll feel like you took hallucinogens...

Soulive always kills it, but the House of Blues in Boston, the Tufts University auditorium, and Brooklyn Bowl were 3 great ones.

Christian McBride, when I was a kid, totally blew me away. I was just learning the bass, and had no idea someone could play it that way. It was eye-opening.

Chuck Berry, I think it was a county fair or something, on Long Island. He was pretty old when I saw him, but he was still on fire. He was a little forgetful, but he could still sing, wail on the guitar, and keep the crowd on its feet.

Snoop Dog w/The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Randalls Island, NY. The sheer novelty of it would give it a place on my list, but it was actually surprisingly good. They did some RHCP songs, some Snoop songs, and some "mash-ups" that combined their songs with eachothers. Pretty cool, and they worked surprisingly well together.

Radiohead. Radiohead shows are like religious experiences. Indescribable beyond that.

I'm sure there are others that blew my mind, rocked my face, or were otherwise note-worthy, but these are the ones that come to mind.

Emerson, Lake and Palmer at SF Civic Auditorium in the 70's. Nothing has even come close to them. I've seen so many concerts that I can not even count them all. I used to go to Winterland in SF. Every Tuesday it was $2.00 for about 3 to 5 bands, good bands too. One tuesday show I remember was Lee Micheals, Black Oak Arkansas, Climax Blues Band, and Grin featuring Nils Lofgren. Other honorable mentions are Ten Years After with Alvin Lee, ZZ Top (before they had their beards), Bob Seager, Yes, U2, Golden Earing 3x, Jefferson Starship 3x, Tom Petty 3x, Leon Russell, Black Sabbath, Manfred Mann's Earth Band (great show), and I could go on and on. Shows are too commercialized nowadays they know exactly how many encores they will come out for and they have a set song list (no deviations). I remember seeing bands come out for 3 to 5 encores- completely unrehearshed. Those were the good old days.

Sooo many concerts over the years... my fave is probably Garth Brooks. Last year in Vegas, a very small auditorium and its like he's speaking right to you... was awesome!
Some of these posts really bring back the good ol' days tho... wow, I remember being absolutely blown away at Emerson Lake & Palmer... The Who was terrific... and the list could go on for a looong time! What memories!
