output voltage on apv

Hi all,
I have a Smoktech Ace and the battery life shows as 4.2 max down to 3.4 when the battery needs to be recharged. I was wondering, if the battery max is 4.2 volts, why does the voltage allow me to adjust up to 6 volts? Am I actually getting that much output?

In simple terms it contains a boost circuit in the converter

It uses a boost circuit. They work by trading current for extra voltage. So instead of for instance 4.2v@2A, you can set it to 5v and it would draw 3A from the battery. (completely made up numbers)

I like dice57's pictorial explanation.

Basically the chip takes in power from the battery and stores it in a capacitor. When the stored energy reaches the potential (voltage) it dumps out to the atty.
