PA DOH deputy press secretary Kathleen Gillis and Conomaugh Health System’s Joe Shetler makes false and misleading fear mongering claims about e-cigarettes in Johnstown Tribune-Democrat editorial urging workplaces to ban e-cig use.

Mike Siegel criticizes PA DOH for its absurd fear mongering claims about e-cigarettes.

I submitted the following letter to the editor of the Johnstown Tribune-Democrat

- - -

Your April 30 editorial urging employers to ban the use of electronic cigarettes was dead wrong.

The evidence on e-cigarettes consistently finds the products pose no known risks to nonusers, are >99% less hazardous than cigarettes, are used almost exclusively by smokers and former smokers who quit by switching, and have already helped more than a million smokers quit.

In contrast to the absurd claim by PA DOH press secretary Kathleen Gillis that “e-cigarettes have the potential to promote more smoking or attract new smokers,” there is no evidence e-cigarettes have ever addicted any nonsmoker or youth.

Joe Shetler was quoted as saying Conemaugh Health System banned e-cigarette use “because of the negative visual association they have with a real cigarette”. That’s not a health argument, but rather a policy to discriminate against people who recently quit smoking.

The only reason our organization campaigned to ban smoking in workplaces for the past three decades was because tobacco smoke pollution contaminates indoor air and is harmful for nonsmokers.

But instead of improving health, banning e-cigarette use in workplaces (other than schools) threatens public health by discouraging smokers from quitting and by deceiving people to believe e-cigarettes are as hazardous as cigarettes.

Last week, a tobacco stock analyst estimated that e-cigarettes will replace 1.5 billion cigarettes on the US market this year.

The best way to further reduce cigarette consumption is to encourage smokers to use e-cigarettes.

Remember -- PA is the state who also had Tommy Chong arrested for simply making and
selling GLASS (that "could be used for...") !

And here all this time, I thought the only way you could lay claim to something being used
or intended to be used for something else was if it contained residue from that "Something
Else".

If that was the case, no tobacco shop could sell a simple pipe because "it has the potential to be
used for..."

I'm sorry but the USA is seriously failing in so many ways it isn't even funny and the biggest
problem is the people who prefer to live silently and allow the Gov to "Take Over Everyone's
Lives" in everything from censorship and dangerous food additives that are forced on us, to
taking our ability to defend ourselves and what we are "Permitted" to Smoke/Inhale/Vape/etc.

Is it any wonder 29% of voters believe there is a "Revolution" coming?

“The quitting strategy with the best success,” she said, “has been through the combination of nicotine replacement treatments and coaching, which is available for free at 800-QUIT-NOW.”

I am tired of people falling back on "approved / proven" cessation aids when those aids don't work and some, like Chantix are worse than the addiction.

Is it just me or does the link to the story not work anymore? Or perhaps they removed it? All I get when I click on it is: While we urge our readers to live healthy lifestyles, it’s none of our business what they do to their bodies.

I just went there and although the article starts with that sentence, it goes on to be quite ridiculous. Maybe you need to to hold down shift while clicking reload? (Reload by itself sometimes pulls a cached copy, which can itself be messed-up.)

The editorial is still on the website.

The newspaper called me this morning to verify that I had sent the letter, so its very likely my letter will be published in the print version and online in the near future.

I not aware of any other criticisms of e-cigarettes by the PA DOH, but I'll contact the agency to criticize their absurd fear mongering claims, and hopefully to prevent it from happening again.

Please note that the State of PA did NOT prosecute Tommy Chong. Rather, Bush appointed former federal prosecutor Mary Beth Buchanon prosecuted Tommy Chong for violating the federal government's outrageous laws (called the War on Drugs) that have increased gun violence and homicides, incarcerated millions of nonviolent Americans (especially minorities), destroyed millions of families, and sharply increased taxes to pay for law enforcement, adjudication, incarceration and social services.

My apologies, I was on my phone and the entire article wouldn't load beyond that first line. Oops.
