OK, so I was thinking about a passthrough...

Seems simple enough.
I haven't searched much, but I am thinking all it needs to be is a USB cord attached to a switch and 510 connector.
Is this correct, or does there need to be some kind of circuit board in there?

Reason I'm asking is that I am thinking of maybe building a VV box mod that, instead of terminating into a 510 connector, terminated into a female USB connector. Then running the Passthrough to the battery box when I'm not near a computer. Kind of a portable power supply for a passthrough.

Has this been done? I haven't seen it before...
Am I missing something? Would it be that simple?

This is a simple 5v PT connected to a battery box. Most computers only put out .5 amps at 5v and that is really not enough to power an atty. Minimum 1 amp and preferably 2 amps.

A lot of USB/cigarette lighter adaptors won't pass any more than 500 mA either, I nuked mine...at the end of the day Nanovapr is right, the batt is doing the heavy lifting, the USB is just an on-board charger. The USB paradigm just wasn't designed to pass 1-2 amps. You may find a USB hub with a beefy enough wall adaptor rated for that...tough to find though.

Here is what you need for that 2 amp 5 volt supply from madvapes instead of your computer. Much safer. With this you will be set in what you want to do. They also have usb cables but read the reviews. Longer cords may not function so well as the blue one listed there.

2 amp AC to USB Adapter, ideal for Passthroughs

As far as the passthrough you have the right idea. As demonstrated in this fine link.

Something to keep in mind is that usb cables are either 28 or 30 gauge wire. I have found that using about 3 ft. of cable, on a 5v 2x 14500 mod, that I lose about 3/4 of 1 volt. It may read 5v at the connector, but take a reading between the connector and atty, you'll see real-time results. Best that I could get was about 4.3v @3.2ohms. Plus the lower the ohms, the less the voltage. My next try may include rj-45 cable @ 24awg.
Just some outloud thoughts. :)

Look around, you can find USB cables with 22ga power wires.

You are correct about the additional resistance and how it affects voltage. Loaded voltage tests are the only ones that matter (with anything actually).

Here's an example of 2 PTs, same 2000mA (2A) PS and 2.4Ω atty. Voltage/ohms measured, AMPs calculated.

PT_comparison_-_2_.jpg

One on the left uses a USB cable from a mouse, on the right a heavy duty cable with 22ga power wires.

Unless you have some pressing need to unplug the PT, just find a 2 - 3A power supply and hardwire it.

One of my first mods.

Just 4 connections to solder... done.

No loss there. :)

Here is a 6' printer cable that is being sold for $2 and free shipping, description says it has 22awg. power wire.
Will be ordering some soon if I don't find locally.

I have noticed printed on the usb cables the wire gauge. Some will have 2 gauge sizes, like, 28awg/24awg. I'm thinking that the larger gauge wire would probably be the red & black power wires. Anyone know if my assumptions are right or wrong? TIA

BTW, printer cables seem to be the ones that are more liable to have larger power wire gauge, from what the searches brought up.

Tomorrow i will be using a home extension cord that is 24 awg to link the atomizer to the male usb connector. Dont know how well it will work out but ill post tomorrow after im finished. I have been playing with the idea of a battery pack that utilizes a female usb connector for a few days now. i think an altoids tin would work perfectly for two 18650's to get a nice 6-7 volts of vape. The modding forum is making me want to start up a mod shop. :toast::vapor:
