I rewired a batteryless passthrough a while back by sticking a usb type a female plug to the bottom of a batteryless passthrough who's cord gave out (why don't they put strain arrestors on those things? It's a damn federal requirement to have one) It worked great. Thing is I've got a room mate now who constantly bogarts the thing, so I'm looking to make another one. The problem is a wire broke at the circuit board on that one. I've tried desoldering the little wire nub to free up the hole so I can replace the wire, but i cant get a pliers on the thing to remove it. I've got a bunch of dead standard batteries. I am now wondering if I can use the circuit board for one of them. Would simply wiring one of those boards to a standard usb power lead work?

Are you talking about Ego type batteries?

I built a passthrough with 3/4" CPVC fittings and short pieces of CPVC pipe. I wired an DC jack to connect to a 510 connector and I use a 5v 2.1 Amp AC adapter (wall wort). It works great and cost less than $10 since I had the AC adapter just laying around.

I did buy one. They last about 3 weeks before the incredibly sharp case cuts throughg the very cheap cable. (see reference to straion arrestor. it's that thing chaped like a tiny christmas tree on the base of any cable) I made what I call my hooka out of one. Pics to follow. It's much more durable and comfortable to hold.

Fair enough. My first passthru mod made from that very passthru mentioned above:


Basically I just wired an old USB cable end to it and packed it with epoxy putty. Looks like bone, it's not too bad, and the cord is replaceable now.

The problem with making another, is my friend litterally pulled the cable right out. The black wire grounds to the case, and the yellow wire is the hot lead to the connector socket. There's a tinsy dot of solder dead center on the left edge. That is the hot from the power source. It's maybe a half mm hole.

I either need a soldering trick to desolder and pull out the tiny piece of wire still in there, or the knowledge of whether or not a standard ego battery circuit board can be used in the same way.

with a "new" dead ego battery I can disassemble it and (hopefully) use the wires still in place.

I don't know any way to desolder the wire especially since I can't really see what you're describing. The problem I see with using the Ego board is that it's designed to use 4.2v or less. You would be trying to run it at 5v. Not sure if it would fry the board or just not work. I guess you could try it. The worst that could happen is what I explained above. Seems like a lot of hassle to save a cheap device.

If it was me, I would just buy a battery with a passthrough built in. Ebay has them for +- $15. They aren't VV though. ego usb passthrough | eBay

I looked for ya to find if the ego battery board can handle usb 5v, couldnt find any info regarding that. Theres another easy way with using a zener 1N4001 and it will drop the voltage to 4.2-3v and you can use the ego board safely regardless. Very easy install

btw my ego boards have surface soldered wires no thru hole just solder on top of old glob after using nail or foot clippers to clip in close.
