I recently made a Nicostick (the first one with the AAA size battery case)
Thanks to nicowolf for this awesome mod.
- but I also made a usb battery to go in it to use it as a passthrough.
Hopefully this minor tweak will be helpful to current and potential NicoStick users.
Here's what you'll need:
1 complete AAA version Nicostick already finished
1 cheap ball point pen
2 screws
2 screw anchors
1 spare usb cable
epoxy
soldering iron
Disassemble the pen and keep the tube, it should be about the same width as a AAA.
Cut the tube to where it is a little shorter than a AAA battery (I just eyeballed it - maybe 1/16" shorter.
Screw each screw into the anchors, insert 1 of these into one end of your cut tube. Tip: Don't screw the screws in all the way, leave about 1/16" of the actual screws exposed - this is where you will solder your wires.
Load up the tube with epoxy so the middle of the tube is full. Insert the other screw/anchor in the other end.
Make sure the screws stay straight in the tube as the epoxy dries.
While this is drying, prepare your usb cable by cutting off one of the plugs.
Strip the outer black sheath about two inches or so and locate the positive and negative wires, and strip back the sheath on those. Any extra wires can be cut back to the black sheath.
Solder the positve wire to one screw, negative to the other. Then tighten the screws the rest of the way into the anchors (snugly but not too tight)
Solder a little "bump" to the top of the screw connected to the positive wire. Solder this in the center of the screw head. This will mimick the "bumb" found on the positve end of a battery.
Once this was complete, I wrapped the whole thing in electrical tape, to protect the wires and to keep them stable. I ran the slack of each wire down the side of our new usbbattery until they meet. Then tape it all up to make things neat.
Place your new battery into the Nicostick so that the wires are hanging over the side opposite of the atomizer assembly. You will need to cut out a slot in the nico stick so the wires are recessed a little. This allows the battery cover to slide into place without pinching the wires.
Congrats! you now have a NicoStick with passthrough option.
I took some pictures with my crappy camera (can't find macro mode), but I also can't find my data cable (darn micro-mini usb!!!!) I'm off to sleep soon, but if you want pics, I'll try to get them to you tomorrow.
Hope this helps.
