Smoked 1 to 1 and a half packs a day for 43 years.

Started vaping end of Jan/start of Feb this year.

Stopped smoking after the first day vaping

Started with a DSE901 then bought a Screwdriver a month(ish) later - mainly use SD now with 901 for "polite" occasions.

Use 11mg, 18mg, and some 24mg juice - mainly TW tobacco-type flavours or British Bulldog - also use 555, Virginia, etc from other suppliers though

Feel much healthier :)

I smoked 2-3 ppd for several years.

If you think your dad will be looking for lots of vapor and a good quality and consistent throat hit, like a lot of us, the e-cig models that have a manual switch are a good choice.

The importance of the manual switch is that it heats the atomizer portion of the e-cig to a higher temp which gives you warmer vapor, lots of vapor, and a good quality throat hit. Another important feature of the manual switch is that it does not have a short cut off or time out to the drag.

For someone new to e-cigs, I would recommend the 510 e-cig model. It's a manual switch e-cig that is reliable, durable, and does what an e-cig is suppose to do.

510 model e-cigs
USA Suppliers
Joye 510 ( e-Smokey Treats - Electronic Cigarette's, The healthy alternative to traditional tobacco cigarette's )
Dura-C ( Janty USA )
Yeti ( AltSmoke - Electronic Cigarettes, DSE901, The Yeti & More. )

UK Supplier
Dura-C ( iVapour | Electronic Cigarettes | Janty Stick ? Janty Kissbox ? Janty Dura-C ? Janty Mini Fogger ? Janty E-Liquid & Cartridges )

China Supplier
Eastmall 510 ( 510 Manual Switch Starter Kit - Black - e-Cigs Manual Switch 510 - Eastmall International Co.,Ltd )

You may also want to include a 510 passthrough with your order. The passthrough is identical to a standard 510 rechargeable battery except that the end portion is wired to a standard USB connector. You simply plug the USB connector into a USB port or portable power pack and can vape all day long without having to change or charge batteries.

The e-liquid you buy will also play an important part in satisfying your nicotine cravings and also in providing a good throat hit. The higher you go in nicotine strength, the better the throat hit. 36 mg nicotine (the highest strength right now) does give a nice throat hit but made me sick and gave me headaches. I smoked 2-3 packs of ciggies per day for several years - so just because you smoked a lot doesn't mean that the higher nicotine is right for you.

For the first 2 months of vaping I used 18 mg (high) nicotine strength and was quite happy with that. I am currently now using 12 mg (medium) nicotine strength and still feel satisfied.

For a first purchase of e-liquid, I would recommend you buy the flavor or flavors you think will best suit your needs. You'll find the right strength for you. There are a lot of suppliers that have good liquid so the field is open there. Wherever you place your e-cig order you will also be able to buy e-liquid.

Finding the right e-cig model and the e-liquid flavor and nic strength that suits you is what is going to make you a successful e-smoker.

I smoked a pack of lights a day for 12 of the last 17 years (I quit somewhat successfully three times in that period.) I assume your father is probably a couple decades older than I am so my input may not be useful -- I'm a technogeek; I love gadgets.

I got my vaporizers (I bought 2 different models) on a saturday, started using it sunday after it charged. I had 4 or 5 analogs that day, two or three for the next several days, and by the following friday, I was out of analogs and never bought more. It was that easy and that organic a process.

A couple of things helped -- I never, ever smoked in the house, but I can vape in the house. That gives me incentive to vape, especially because it's been very rainy and stormy here -- several tornados, hail and t-storms. I never liked the flavor of tobacco -- I was just feeding a habit, so when I found a flavor I liked, I wanted more of that, not more of the ashy flavor. My partner kisses me better now that I don't smoke.

I originally bought a VX2/J118 and a m401. I like them both quite a bit. To me, they're both the right size, they're reliable (so far) and I like the geeky aspects of them. (I now have a Blu, too and find I like it for convenience.) My partner, who smoked pipes and cigars for years, has a DSE 601 pipe, and loves it -- lots and lots of vapor, long battery life, reliable atomizer, and huge cartridges.

If I was trying to convince him, I'd just make sure he had plenty of batteries, atomizers and an assortment of liquids and cartridges available in flavors he might enjoy -- people seem to speak highly of a number of the tobacco flavored liquids -- and make sure they're high nic content.

Techy helps. Really it does.

I'm in the same boat as your dad.

I started on a janty dura c about a week ago. The "smoking" sensation is surprisingly good enough to give up the cigs, but......

there is a lot of fussing around with charging batteries, refilling liquid, etc.

actually, the charging batteries thing is what has made me fall off the wagon a couple of times in my week or so of vaping.

i think i will be looking into some kind of device with a lot more battery power and longevity, and something that holds a lot of liquid.

also, if price is not an issue for your dad, maybe a huge supply of pre filled cartridges would be a good idea to get him going rather than re filling. i'm thinking of taking that route.

on the positive side, this technology will allow him to give up the camel straights. the vapor has the sensation of real smoke, and even the different non tobacco flavors taste good.

maybe a small cig model, and a big cigar type model or pipe style would give him some choices to see what works best.

good luck!

i'd say start with a 2-piece disposable model first, then GRADUATE to a 3-piece model, which at that point, i would DEF suggest a 510.. as others have told me, there is a bit of a learning curve with the 510, and if you don't manage it correctly, you may start off with a lackluster experience, and a bad taste in your mouth, figuratively and literally. just my .02

I went for a straight c\o to e-cig 8 weeks ago now.
40+ years smoker, filtered full strength.
Critical points were:
Lack of flavour-so I recommend a strong one
Equipment failure- I use 3 x DSE901's now and am expecting to spend more.

Associated habits- after so many years it gets automatic to stock up on cigarettes when in the store so I kept 4 packs (still untouched). I also find I now use incense sticks (something to use that lighter for?) and buy humbugs (mint sweets). My input of Southern Comfort has gone up too.
There are other things not coming to mind.
As your Dad has a major reason to leave the tobacco alone he might have less trouble finding these substitutes for the old habit. A major part is catching yourself in the weak moments and making an effort to hold off.

The switch over is working for me and I recommend it for long term smokers, stressful in the first week but worth it.
I wish him success and good health.

i use a DSE-901 real with SLB on the battery connectors there is a slight difference to the RN4075

whats your juice of choice and where do you get it from?
i have used many but i like TW juice in 36mg and also a mix of the hilton and carolina blends in 36mg from vapornine

how long did it take you to kick analogs?
it took about 3 weeks to about a month and a half to learn the device and get a rhythm down that provided me with the right fix and throat hit

my dad is a 30 year smoker of camel straights no filter with 1 pack a day, im looking to get him a ecig to replace his habit of the analogs, just was wondering your personal favs, analog quit time and so on.

i smoked them as well as other brands full 100's non menthol
i use the 901 completely no others but have tried the janty kb,mini fogger and a kr-808

any info you could provide me with would be appreciated.
just remind him it takes time to switch over and it is ok if he still smokes and analog from time to time. Pvs are after all just an alternative and not a NRT so there is no quilt in having analogs from time to time

This.

I started with a 510. I wanted to start out with something that veteran e-smokers are using, and I like learning things the hard way. I've gotten what I've asked for. A few scares here and there - a few mistakes here and there.. Not enough to scare me away from vaping, but probably enough to scare off someone that's simply looking for a convenient replacement for cigarettes. Don't get me wrong, the 510 is awesome, but for starting out (especially with high expectations), perhaps the 901 or m401 would be a nice introductory device, or a disposable one just to get a foot in the water.

I smoked for 10 years at least 1 ppd marlboro 100 regular filters.
At 30 years I find myself confident with technology and the manual 510 still doesn't convince me. I find it hard to push the button if I want to vape.
I am now using a DSE901 (more vapor and cooler running) but my main device is the RN4081 because it has a warmer smoke and allows for 1 hand dripping directly into the atty while doing other stuff.
Usually the cartridges have a very small quantity of liquid so i find it easier to just drip around 5ml/day.
It took me 3 weeks of vaping and smoking because the 510 didn't convince me and I quit smoking after getting the DSE901 and lost completely the craving after trying the RN4081.

Started with 18mg juice and am now alternating between 0mg and 11mg.

The point is you should discuss it with your father if he is ok with pushing a button or needs something more cig like. Be prepared to switch through some cig models until you find one that suits him best.
Big carts are better (RN701 e-cigar, DSE801 pen-style cigarette or even the e-pipe) because filling and changing carts combined with battery charging is scary when compared to analogs.

E-cigars and e-pipes are better for puffing so I believe that the penstyle is best, my personal opinion.

Good luck converting him!

PS: used Virginia liquid to quit and never touched an analog in the last 51 days and never ever will again!

I was a 35 yr pack a day smoker and other than finishing up the 2 packs i had left i put down the analogs end of may 08. you could start out with the 801 penstyle but believe me they are hit and miss on that "feels like the real thing" performance. i would just get a dura-c or other 510 starter kit or 2. 10 pack of refills( easier to make the transition than messing with refilling but let him know its a cheaper option).and a pcc or 2. don't know what he does for a living so i can't speak for the USB charger. do all the initial batt charges before giving it to him.the more you make this "turn key" the better.

42 year 1-1 & 1/2 pack a day. First 30 years or so on Marlboro reds, last 12 years on M lights.

Started vaping on Apri 24, 2009 with a Red Dragon. Still smoked 3-4 analogs a day. That lasted 2 weeks until I recieved my 901b, which is my main vape now. I also use a M401 (cig clone -white/brown) at work and at social occasions. No analogs since May 4.

My favorite juice is flue cured then 555 - 24 and 36mg. I also get a kick out of wild cherry and strawberry.

I smoked 20 plus a day for over 30 years, i quit real cigs in 2 or 3 days of starting to vape. I have 2 evo ecigs and 2 dse901s, i tend to stick with tobacco flavoured juice medium or high strength, totally wicked and ecopure are my favs. Buying that first ecig is the best thing i've done in years, i thought when i bought it that it would be a 5 minute wonder and i'd probably end up throwing it away in a few days, but here i am 8 months later with 4 ecigs, and i've not even craved a real cig in all that time.:)

For 40 years I smoked a pack a day of regular strength Winstons. At noon on Feb 23 the mailman brought me a 401 and 10 ml of vanilla flavored liquid and I haven't had an analog since. (I did try one once or twice but they taste horrible now to me.)

I think I am lucky. Many people on here speak of taking a while to get off analogs.

I later got a 'real' 901 (one with the SLB engraved on the battery connector end.) I am down to only one battery for it now because my first two batteries were not 'real' and died quickly. If you go with a 901, Nate at True Vapor has the real thing and is very good to deal with. There are many other fine dealers out there, too.

I am stuck with the 401's for the most part since I have 5 atomizers and 4 batteries.
I'd say get familiar with several styles before you invest heavily in parts.

I vape 16-18 mg liquid. I have several many flavors and am starting to mix my own. I really am finding I prefer the Berries (Cherry, Rasp. and Blackberry) and Redbull flavors for half the time. The other half (or if I had to choose), I prefer RY4/Riskee or 555.

Good luck to your dad and if he gets into this I hope he is a tinkerer.

I can vouch for the tinkering part. It's kind of like having a pet--not a dog but maybe a parakeet. These things need feeding and attention. I've gotten used to this part, but I don't really like it. Friends who just won't tinker haven't done well on them. I smoked for many decades and just stopped when I got the e-cigs, the same day. I've been through many different models and have settled on the Janty Kissbox, of which I have many. They have been reliable. I also use 901s, on occassion, and have several of those. I'm surprised at the wide preference here for the 510s, etc. because I find the big ones (Kissbox, 801, etc.) are much better producers.

Smoked at least a pack a day for 50 years (since I was 14), and smoked "More Menthol 120's" for the last 10 years. I started with an NJOY NCIG and their menthol carts and never looked back. I really do like vaping better than smoking. Now I use different 801 attys and batteries, I have no problem interchanging brand parts, a USB passthru with an AC/USB adapter at my watching TV chair, and carry spare batteries and juice when I'm out. I like Jane's "Abandon Mint" extra high juice (Personal Vaporising Units) since I was a heavy menthol user.

I love to tinker and love gadgets, so PV's are great for me. I tried to get my daughter to use one, but the hassle was too much for her. She'd have to get a whole bunch of disposables for it to work. Probably worth it. I'm sure this technology is in the very early stages, and hopefully the vaper won't have to be a handyman in the future.

Best of luck to your father, he's lucky to have a concerned kid.

Started with a 901 went to a 801, just started using a 510. I love the 510 over the 901 (due to the manual switch) for general use and when we go out, I like to use the 801. My 801 is a lot more fun to show off. Its silver and everyone asks about it.

I work with electronics and write computer programs and design control systems. so you can imagine whenever some new electronic gadget comes out, I have to have one. Everyone that knows me gets a kick out of it. Whenever they introduced me to someone they say, this is our electronic guru, he even smokes a electronic cigarettes.

Smoked for 41 years....2-3 packs a day. Got a DSE 901 to begin with, switched to a Joye 510 and like the manual battery (plus I don't end up with e-uice on my lips or in my mouth with the 510). Quit real cigs the first day I started using the e-cig and that was over 3 months ago. Don't have a favorite e-liquid yet...

hey everyone THANKS!

my dad is a semi driver, he hauls steel, so theres alot of time im sure he is driving and smoking. infact the semis are now automatics, so im sure theres more smoking going on now then there was when he was shifting the 18 or however many gears.

as much as i want to get him it as a surprise i personally think it would be better for me to kinda go over it with him and let him pick what he wants, after some discussion without mentioning that i was looking to get him anything we talked about blu, 901 and the screwdriver, with the screwdriver having most of his attention.

what are some of the mistakes with the 501 that most new vapors have with them?

thanks

As a 2 pack a day smoker for almost 20 years... The best solution I found to make the switch was the Manual 510 also called the Dura-C, Titan, Yeti & maybe another name or two by now... and to use 24mg or stronger Nic Juice... I myself like the coffee flavors because they seem to stand out a bit more and my taste buds from smoking have taken some abuse... So Manual 510 and 24mg or Stronger Juice...

The biggest mistake I see with New 510 users is not reading instructions... The 1st time you charge 510 battery's you must charge for 8 hours, use for 20 mins then charge for one more hour... after the initial charge and use you must charge for 1-2 hours never less than 1 hour and never more than 2... it seems to prolong battery life this way...
