Good for you. You're on the right track. Note that E-Cig lists four fragrances among the ingredients for its e-liquid. Obviously, the amounts of each are miniscule, since these are oils. Too miniscule to satisfy from a taste standpoint. So I went looking for my own tobacco absolute. What I found was "Dad's Pipe," a fragrance oil used in candlemaking. The cheapest bottle was $4 -- but $8 to ship. That stopped me cold. Too expensive.

Then I thought of the product called Liquid Smoke. I read how they make it: Sawdust from select trees is heated until it smolders (never burns) and releases smoke, which is captured in tubing that passes through very cold containers. At the end of the tubing, condensed water drips out, containing "Liquid Smoke." I tried it yesterday. Bought tubing, put it in ice, and blew pipe smoke through it.

Nada. Nothing but smoke came out. I had 8 feet of tubing. Must have needed more, or a colder temperature.

Then I bubbled smoke through water, ala hookah. That water stunk like an ashtray that got rained on. That's not the fragrance I'm after! I dumped it down the sink.

I want taste and aftertaste with e-smoking. So far, the tastes I've bought are wimpy. Aroma and taste are so closely tied that if we get the smell right, we'll get the taste. The experiments continue: I "cooked" 10 smoked Kahlua cigar butts yesterday. I got black liquid with no particulates, but not the taste of smoking that excellent cigar.

Wow TB, that's quite a lot of experimentation!

You're trying to replicate the true taste of smoking with e-smoking devices?

Hmm from what I understand, the smell of tobacco can be synthesized.

You're definitely right about aroma and taste being so closely tied. Isn't the saying that 80% of taste is smell? Perhaps I'll see if i can drip with some diluted essential oil.

Please be careful about inhaling oils Rorschach, they might be toxic in the amounts we would add to diy eliquid. I know there are some in ready made juice but the quantities are likely to be minuscule as TBob says. You might be interested in some of the information on this thread - http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/diy-e-liquid/1984-flavoring-essential-oils.html

If you do try it watch out for irritation and, well, just be careful. Let us know how it goes too for future reference.

I've had some disasters too today.

Got 'coffee' essence but it tasted like nowt in my cig. So decided to boil it down to try to get a more concentrated flavour. YUCK & YUCK! More like burnt sugar. So tossed that one.

Then mixed up one with VG/Wicked Vanilla/Chocolate Essence. Feel sticky stuff dripping onto my fingers - it had leaked onto my battery:rolleyes:...minor panic attack and much shaking of the battery thinking I had damaged it for life at all of 2 days old. It's fine thankfully. Clearly the mix was too thin - lesson learnt.

The best tastes I have had so far are Rose water & Peppermint. Both are oils but they are in an alcohol base (Star Kay White flavours) so are already very diluted. Still I am cautious - tend to not inhale into my lungs often - just get mouth feel with them. The peppermint is really good, nice & strong. So far I have one really good taste. The others I made range from vile to okay. The wicked flavours are good, probably as strong as they come but still not quite enough for me -
I want my tastes VERY STRONG. :)

Maybe someone could design a 'nose piece' into the cart - something that has space for dripping in a concentrated flavour that is not vaped - just smelt while one vapes. Mmmm...tomorrow I will soak some cottonwool and hold it near my nose while vaping to see if it would work...

Good luck with your scent experiments Rorschach.

Tomorrow could not wait.

So I did this: soaked paper towel strips in the essences and loosely tucked them around the cart.
I'm pretty amazed. This works VERY well considering it's simplicity- or is it just me thinking this:confused:!
Not quite there on the taste buds (I still want more...) but a darned good con imo. Kind of gives it a top note. The weak choc essence definately improved. Bit tricky to co ordinate sniffing and dragging at the same time but could be mastered.;)
Anyone else up for trying this? Would like to know if I am just losing the plot now...

Admittedly it does not look glam. Maybe a piece of black felt wrapped around it would be better looking and more absorbent. Advantage here is with no ingestion one could use neat strong oils. I have a feeling these would work better than my diluted essences. :)

I feel further experiments coming up...

Hi Ruby

Some very interesting experiments you've got going there!

I would definitely make sure things are properly diluted, as essential oils are volatile even to SKIN!

I'd say maybe 15% at most of essential oils, 75% ethanol, 10% water for just a fragrance to wear. But SMOKING on the other hand....we'll have to figure this out the hard way.

Seriously though I think essential oils are best kept out of our liquids. Although I have to say so far the peppermint one I use has not clogged my atomiser yet. And it delivers real flavour which is a godsend after so little good taste. Even so I am nervous of using it dilute in alcohol or not. Won't make a habit of it. It's better off, on the cart not in it.

Im not awake.

I know Bob knows this but, I was bored and thought I would make a diagram.

You can use this for ANY hard wood, mesquite, Hickory, Walnut, Maple, do not use Pine
You should be able to use this for Herbs as well, but the process is alot slower, and you have to really watch so you dont burn the herbs. You just want to super heat them, not catch fire. Spray with water to keep smoldering. It should work for tobacco, but I never tryed that.

Oh, I love bacon. It would be wonderful to be able to vape bacon flavour ... drool ... :hubba:

I've been trying to cut back on the amount of meat I eat for health and ethical reasons but bacon always has been my downfall. If there was bacon eliquid I might be able to quit in the same way I was able to quit cigarettes. That could be another unique selling point for ecigs, aimed at aspiring vegetarians, lol.

LOVE bacon. When my cholesterol was high last year, I told the doc that a bacon-and-cheese sandwich (white bread, of course) was my favorite food. I said it would be my last meal request were I on Death Row. Which is where he said I was heading with my diet as he slapped his forehead.

So ... cheese has become Yellow Death and I now use non-fat varieties. Bacon, however, is my Pig Out of choice (along with barbecued pork).

Now I've done it. I'm hungry. Arrrrgh.

Remember: No more oil than can be soaked into a toothpick, which is then dipped into the e-liquid fluid. No dripping. No sophisticated measurement. Be safe; go easy. Great diagram, BTW. Must try it!

P.S. Great new use for my underutilized barbecue grill on the back porch.
