Such pretty cats, Morri! Their coats are so shiny - and the eyes! The last pic is great - those huge playful yellow eyes and the clawed paw reaching for the ribbons - that's just *so cat*! :)

You reminded me, after looking at the pic, they both need a manicure. LOL I have to clip their nails every other week or so or they scratch each other something fierce when they are playing.

Beautiful cats and beautiful pics of them!! What kind of camera are you using to get such great indoor pictures without the flash bouncing off their eyes?

oh Yiddle, it is one of my favorite cameras, (used to be photographer) it is an Olympus e-300 Evolt. using 45mm lens and filter. It is a SLR-Digital combo. And I wasn't that close to them. I used zoommmmm on em. heheheh

Which reminds *me*: I gotta trim my Mom's cat's claws... Oy-vei. There will be blood. And howling-yowling-hissing-spitting-fighting-feline. Not looking forward to it.

Mastiffs are good. I mean great dogs but ermm not Newfs :D

Make no mistake I would own one in a heartbeat but no webbed feet = not a Newf.

Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk 2

What a beautiful Landseer!!! OMG, I *so* love Newfs. My very first dog was a Newf - she was truly a princess of dogs. Do you have pictures? Please? :)

Mastiffs: "As a lion is to a cat, so is a mastiff compared to a dog."

A very old breed, Mastiffs were depicted in Egyptian monuments as early as 3000 BC.

It is believed that a Mastiff came to America on the Mayflower.

One of the most famous mastiffs of all time [besides my avatar!]: the mastiff of Sir Peers Legh. When Legh was wounded in the battle of Agincourt, his mastiff stood over him and protected him for many hours through the battle.

Mastiff are a foundation breed and many other breeds wouldn't exist without the Mastiff lineage. Some of these include:

Tibetan Mastiffs:

For scale purposes (and because I would like to be that guy!):

Neapolition Mastiffs: (If they didn't drool so much, I'd get one!)

There's more but that's a pretty good sampling (forgive me if I neglected to mention your favorite breed!). So the easiest way to guesstimate if a breed is decendant from Mastiffs, answer one question: "Are they small and yippy?" If not they owe it all to Mastiffs! :p

You chose wisely. LOL

To be honest, I never trimmed claws for my own cats, they just didn't scratch enough to warrant it, and I was afraid if they got out, they'd have nothing to defend themselves with... I had one cat, who used to "fish" for the dog while the dog was in his crate, and the dog was a Golden with no sense whatsoever, he didn't have the wits to duck. So I put those pink claw sheaths on her.

My last cat, Masha, didn't ever touch a living soul (other than mice) with a claw. She just slapped the heck out of whoever bothered her with her claws sheathed, like when Myst the Dog got too rambunctious with her. Otherwise, she only used her claws to climb walls. Yes, she actually climbed walls. LOL

ohhhh. I trained my kitties from when they were kittens. I massaged their little paws, so they don't get excited. THey are just glad when I get done. LOL

Only joshing, love mastiffs.

Although no-one is certain about their line it is thought that the Vikings brought mastiff's over to America when they had colonies over here and Newfie's came out of that stock.

Obviously I am a fan of the giant breeds. Just great dogs.

Will put up some pictures of my one later. Ok here is a bigger version on my avatar.

Great pictures, Mastiff - thanks. :) Yes, Mastiffs are indeed the foundation breeds of many, many dogs, if not most of them... And I didn't know the story of Sir Legh - I'll have to look it up.

But, yes, you did forget one breed that is probably related (and very ancient): Caucasian Ovcharka:

Caucasian 2.jpg

Caucasian 3.jpg

I love this breed, and their history, but I'd never have one. They are historically very aggressive - they evolved as flock guardians in harsh conditions in Russia, and the army had to actually breed them to be *less* aggressive to serve as guard dogs and such. But they are fearless, and extremely loyal to their family with tremendous work ethic and spirit. They are very intelligent, and are not "aggressive" in the sense that they like attacking anything and everything - just very, very protective, and would take on anything to defend their charge. Not a good pet though.

P.S. I still can't figure out how to make the pics larger when uploading from my 'puter. :(

Not my experience.

Had English Mastiffs, Bernese Mountain Dogs and obviously a Newf. None of them ever showed aggression. The only thing that they endanger is the contents of their dog bowl or whatever you think is safe from their tails.

Abuse them or their families and they will protect however overtly aggressive ? No. My sons learned to stand and walk with help of my Newf and was the play ground for climbing, pulling tugging and generally irritating. He slobbered them by shaking his head and licking them but he and all the other giants I have met are about as passive a dog as you will find.

All you can do it speak as you find.

Will add the caveat of Georgian Shepherds which I haven't seen in the US, or outside Georgia thinking about it, which can be naughty.

Oh, no, I didn't mean Newfies - they have great temperaments in my experience. The best. :) A dream dog, as far as I am concerned. Most giant breed are great that way. I've had dealings with Mastiffs, Leonbergers, Saints, and, of course, as I mentioned, I was owned by a Newf. The only problems I ever had with her is that I couldn't go swimming too well - she'd try to "rescue" me every time. LOL It was either grab her around the neck and allow her to tow me, or, else, have an anxious pile of fur trying to pull me out of the water by insinuating herself under my arms.

The only reason I wrote what I did about Caucasians is because they are becoming a "fashion" dog, and people are getting more than they bargained for. Whenever I talk about dogs, I have a tendency to go into "responsible dog owner" bit...

Cuacasian Shephers (which is what I was talking about), are... different. They evolved almost in the conditions of wild creatures. They were left alone with the flocks, in the environment where the weather is harsh, and wolves and bears are known to attack both flocks and humans to this day.

Not my experience.

And lets not forget Jazz & Whiskey:):) Standard Schnauzers (Breed originated from Germany)

Schnauzers are very good-looking dogs. I've only met miniature ones though, and that only a couple of times. Beautiful picture. :) Do they also have some Mastiff in them from way back? :D
