I am new to e-cigs. Been using them for about a month. I have noticed a significant increase in blood pressure and also increased inflammation in my joints. My doctor thinks I may have gout, which is due to an increase in Uric acid. I have tried to research, but have not found anything, so I am wondering if anyone here knows anything about whether PG or VG could increase Uric Acid. I have used both PG and VG. Thanks so much!

I have a long family history of gout and high blood pressure. Some in my family are drinkers and some are not, but even the non drinkers in my family have had bouts with that nasty ailment. My issues with gout were my drinking (sober 4 years now!!).

Everyones different but I'm sure in my case that if e-liquid (PG/VG) were a contributing factor for gout, I would have had a recurrence. I have not! My BP is fine but I take BP meds and since vaping, I have not seen the slightest increase in my blood pressure.

Asprin is a no no if you are having a flare up of gout along with any high purine food or beverage (shellfish/beer etc.).

I have read some threads where people who vaped PG had some increased BP and they had switched to VG. You on the other hand have tried both so I really can't point you in any one direction.

You may want to vape only VG with a low nic level for a while to see if that helps.

Not a doctor - and don't play one on TV either, but - have had family members that suffered with gout, and one of the triggers that caused inflammation was dehydration. If they didn't drink enough fluids, their symptoms got worse. Both PG and VG are hygroscopic fluids - they attract moisture - and a lot of Vapors report experiencing dehydration (dry mouth) after heavy vaping. It might be as simple a solution as drinking more water than you used to before you started vaping.

PG and VG are also complex sugars (VG is one of the main ingredients in the fondant used to decorate cakes), so if you have problems processing sugars - hypoglycemic/hyperglycemic/diabetic/obesity - that may also be a contributing factor.

yep!

forgot-water, water, water.

Good call orville99!

I'm a big time water drinker (2 gal a day at least).

debh,

Hopefully you can weather the storm and get things manageable. Try the low nic VG juice, stay away from the purine laden foods or drinks and water, water, water.

Analogues SUCK!

If anyone else has had a bout with the gout, they now the pain. That ailment is nasty!!!!
I had it so bad in my knee one time that I couldn't get downstairs or even bend my knee enough to get in the shower. Later, when I finally was able to get in the shower, just the water alone hitting the joint would feel like someone was stabbing me with a knife.

Gout=BAD!

Good luck and keep us posted!

I've also suffered from gout attacks and high blood pressure in the past. Through diet and blood pressure meds have had both under control for 2+ years. When I started vaping exclusively BOOM instant gout attack in my feet. PAIN, PAIN, PAIN for a week.

Im no doctor but convinced vaping dehydrated me and led to the attack. What seems to be working for me is not eating eat meat/fish and drinking lots of water. Meats and fish contain high purine levels which produces uric acid in the body.

You have my sympathy cause I wouldn't wish for gout on my worst enemy. Hope everything works out OK.

I thought i had gout once but it turned out to only be a tumor :p Lucky me, i had it scraped out and now i'm fine. Except for the occasional growback, such as is starting to happen now

Any kind of legume have lots of uric acid. Green beans, peanuts. Also beer. Pretty much all the really tasty stuff. Gout used to be a very posh thing to have, as a matter of fact :?:

Used to be a product on the market called Orudis KT, with ketaprofen (i think). It failed, but everyone who used it swore by it, including me. Ask your doctor, maybe there's something like it available OTC or with a prescription.

I am a diabetic with high blood pressure. So far I have lowered my B.P.

I test my Blood sugar all the time, vaping doesn't affect it at all.\

I had gout a couple of times and the Dr.s blamed everything but what caused it (for me), Lack of water!!!! I drink a lot now and haven't had an attact in years. Thank Goodness!!!!!!

There are prescription medications both to prevent uric acid buildup in the system, and some to reduce the pain associated with a gout attack. Speak to your doctor if you are having frequent attacks. Do not start the one to prevent it while you are in an attack. Wait until the attack has gone, or it will be worse. (I"m not going to go into drug names, as I'm a nurse, that wants no liability...hence the "speak with your doctor")

indomethicin!

I know it well-LOL

For ages I thought I was the only gout sufferer around-LOL!

Nice to know others can sympathize with our plight.

Hang in there deb!

BTW, transmothra,

"Just a tumor"? No offense, but you had me chuckling a bit on that one.
Hope that sucker doesnt have to be trimmed again. Sounds painfull.

Happy Vaping!

Went back to the doctor this morning. He needs me to do more tests to see if it really is gout or something else. Put me on blood pressure medicine, too. So, hopefully he will get to the bottom of things. I'll keep in mind what everyone said if it is definitely gout, and in the meantime will drink LOTS of water to see if that helps! I printed out a bunch of stuff on e-cigs to leave with him. He hadn't heard of them before, but said he'll read what I gave him, so that was promising. At least he didn't just balk at it and tell me not to vape, so that was good. :)

Good to hear you are getting everything checked out!

When I had my first gout attack I thought I had broken my toe. I just couldn't figure out how unless I was drunk and stubbed it-LOL!

I went to my Doc and he took one look at the toe then touched it and said "looks like gout". I said "What's Gout?". He said "Painfull" then laughed!

A good indicator for gout is if the joint is really warm to the touch. If I just barely ran my finger over the area it was so sensative it would hurt.

The Doc will mostlikely check out your Uric acid levels and purines in the blood and that will tell them what it may be. From what I gather, what happens is the body generates uric acid normally but it is expelled through bodily functions. Gout occures when there is too much uric acid or the body is not expelling enough of it. It actually accumulates and crystalizes in the joints where there is slower circulation and the crystals actually stab the nerve endings creating many times, excruciating pain.

Your Doctor sounds like a reasonable person and I'm glad their willing to research e-cigs. I hear of many that just flat out deny their potential benefits.

I haven't seen my Doc in a while so I need to make an appointment and mention the e-cigs during my checkup.

My symptoms are burning and redness on the top of my feet and knees and forearms. Can't say it's as painful as what you describe, but VERY uncomfortable! I have had these symptoms in the past (but ignored them), but it does seem like they have been a lot worse since vaping, though from what everyone has said, it could be dehydration making things worse, I guess. Not really sure if the blood pressure is really higher since I started vaping, or not. Been "borderline" for quite some time, but started checking it regularly since I started vaping since I have read of others that felt like it was a problem for them, and when it was so much higher than it had been in the past, I got worried that it was the vaping. Probably just old age creeping up.
