So, I got my first PV today, a 510 disposable from MadVapes. I also got some juice from them, which they state is less than 25% VG (exact PG/VG percentages aren't given).

I'm enjoying the flavors - admittedly, not as much as I expected to, but I understand that the "aha!" moment of enjoyment often takes several days of vaping to come on. I think I understand what TH is, but I'm not sure I'm enjoying it. With these juices, I find that if I take a large hit, what I guess is the Throat Hit is kind of unpleasant.. burny and rough, like when you're still learning to smoke an analog cigarette (for you former smokers out there). I enjoy the thick vapor mouthfeel and I like the flavor I get that way, but the TH is a little offputting.

Is this because 1) I'm new to vaping; 2) I am not using the ideal PG/VG mix for me (no idea what that would be as yet); 3) A different brand might be more to my satisfaction; or 4) I am doing it wrong? Or some combination of the above? :)

TIA for your thoughts and tips!

Hi. I am new as well. been vaping only a month and a half totally cig free. I got some juice from DFW vapor that was really great flavor wise 30 vg base at 24 mg. Today i tried a new company just for fun (because hey, new flavors and stuff is fun, right?). Vape, throat hit were both great but the flavor is really really subtle. They use a 20/80 ratio (same mg nic- 24). This other company got some great youtube reviews and that is why I checked them out.

So my question is, could that tiny ratio difference mean a loss in flavor? It's a shame because I can smell the flavor but not taste it, if that makes any sense.

Any help would be appreciated. Also, what companies do you recommend? DFW is going to be my "go to guy", but I am liking the experimenting (even if this one was kind of disappointing).

Hi Cloudbank- I highly recommend DFW Vapor out of Texas for juice. The Vanilla ice cream and chai tea are two of my favorites from him. I have never had scratchiness in my throat when hitting on this juice. He does a 30 VG in his blends but will customize it for you. I have gone with the straight blends (I also really like carmel macchiato). I have also had his peach (tastes like a fresh slightly under ripe peach), cheesecake, yep it tastes like it (not good for all day, but good for something different). I even tried (for the hell of it) Marlboro and it does taste like it. I will be giving that one to a friend- I hate the taste of cigs now. After 30 years, go figure.

Hi all, and thanks for the comments!

tybin and Shinypaladin - I will try a higher VG % in my next juice purchase. Thanks for the tip!

doots - Thanks! I bought three juices in different strengths to get a sense of what the right nic strength would be for me. I have one each of a 6, an 11, and an 18mg juice. So far I've tried the 6 and the 11.

IsaacClarke - I've only had my disposable PV a few hours but the 510 is nice. If you want something that simulates an analog smoke then this seems like it. I think for me, the battery life will be the issue that drives me to something non-disposable or even to a mod like the Reo.

Trillium35 - Thanks for the rec. I bought these juices at MadVapes, and they have good reviews, but I think my next purchases will be from TastyVapes (local to me), Alien, or FreedomSmoke, which were all recommended to me by an experienced vaper, and where I have more control over the PG to VG ratio.

Thanks again for the great comments, keep 'em coming. :)

Hi, Cloudbank!
I've not seen this mentioned yet. When you take a "large hit" and get that "burny and rough" sensation, what could be happening is that your atomizer/cartridge or cartomizer cannot wick fast enough to keep the coil wet. So, you get a little burn at the end of the puff. That could account for what you are experiencing. Especially given that you are using a 510 disposable. It is a great way to get a sense of what vaping is like, but imho, disposables are not going to equal the performance/flavor/etc. of a regular ecig such as a 510 or KR808D-1. Depending on what kind of analogues you smoke, and how many, 6 and 11 mg are pretty low. 18 mg is usually compared to a "light" cigarette, and 24 mg to a "full flavor" cig.
TH should not be "burny and rough." You might be taking a "large hit" because the level of nicotine is too low in the 6 and 11 mg for you.

Hi Buzzy,

Thanks for the tip. I actually just got a Reo Mini, so I'm just waiting for the parts I need to come in the mail so I can start using it. I'm very interested to see how my experience will differ with that, because I'm sure it will be vastly different.

I started off with low nic because I wasn't sure how much I'd want. I'm not a heavy smoker, more of an occasional one. But I think you are on to something with the power of the draw not being supported by this 510 disposable. I have ordered some other flavors from other vendors in different concentrations and PG/VG mixtures, so I can experiment.

Your insight is much appreciated!

Welcome to vaping. Do remember that as you farther away from smoking your taste will get a lot more sensitive (it won't take very long) so some of the "subtle" flavors may be a lot more flavorful than you thought. Also, and often overlooked in the haste to play with new flavors, quite a few pre-mades may need to age a few days before the extra alcohols dissipate and the flavors meld throughout the e-liquid. Reason I mention this is that you said you could smell it, but not taste it too well- that is often what happens to an un-ripened pre-mix (or it may smell terrible and perfumy). I have several that when they arrive I just set on the shelf for a bit before I use them - can make all the difference in the world. But it is hard to resist just going for it.

Again, welcome and enjoy!

WOW I just got one of the clear CE2 510 cartomizers and it is amazing!! WOW! if you start to look for a permanent vaping solution, check out those "clearomizers" :) I vape only VG and had a hard time finding an atomizer that did not give me nasty harsh hits. I use 510 and Ego products that are all compatible with each other. This is a great place to find out info before making purchases, but be aware that there is a LOT of info here. What I like so far about the clear CE2 is being able to see what is going on inside, and it holds a lot of juice so I don't have to drip drip drip, and no filler to burn. So far each puff is smoooooth as silk! LOVE

Hey there, I am still pretty new to the vapeing world myself but I have tried both 100% PG and 100% VG juices.

In some ways I like the 100% VG, but in alot of ways I don't.

I find that all my 100% VG juices have a kinda funky musty underlying taste that I don't really like.

I also find that if I have been vaping 100% VG juices all day, the next day I seem to have way way more mucous in my throat and nose, reminds me of when I was smoking a pack a day, but even thicker!

I also notice when I exhale 100% VG based juices, and exhale some through my nose, it gets a sensation like its full of water, like when your swimming and some gets up there, its odd.

I still need to do some experimentation, but so far I don't think heavy VG juices are for me.

But I do love the vapor!

Hi Bradder,

Of the three flavors I got for my first pass, they do tend to all have a similar taste to me. They're sweet but I think I am missing the subtlety of the differences. I'll hang on to them and try them again in a few days, perhaps when I get my Reo going.

Hi burnsmary95,

I don't think I'll need a cartomizer with the Reo, but if I decide to pick up another 510 model, I'll certainly keep the clear CE2s in mind. I just watched a very good youtube video review of them and they do look nice!

Hi jameth,

I just ordered some juices from different suppliers - some are 100% VG, some are 80% VG, some are less. The ones I have so far are at least 75% PG and while they're ok I think it's likely this is not the perfect combination for me. Thanks for the info about your experience with 100% VG, though - I'll keep that in mind as I try different mixes. Good luck with your experimentation!

I like a mix of PG VG, usually 70PG 30VG or 60PG 40VG. PG more for the taste and because I don't think it clogs your atty as quick and VG to add vapor and soften the TH a little. So far I've been vaping some methols, a tobacco, and a few fruity flavours. So last night I decided to order a few juices more on the spice side from FreedomSmokeUSA which gives you the option for PG/VG % most of the time, has the option for extra flavouring, has pretty resonable prices, and also offers a "sample size" which is 2.5ml for about $2.50. I would give them a try! Good luck and happy vaping!

Hi, I'm also new to vapeing. What I find that helps me when I'm sampling flavors is to order 50%/50%, PG/VG. It is easy to adjust from there to find that mix that satisfies my taste. With nicotine I start at the highest, usually 24ML and adjust from there. It has been quite a learning experience. I had no idea that so much was involved with vapeing. It is a fun process though.
