moo, you need to do some more regular textured Phinny, so I can buy one and get T caps for it. :p

We were just talking about that. I have a ton of Doctors appointments this coming week, we will try to fit in some textured tanks, if not this coming week then next!

My girlfriend got herself her first carto tank and decided to go Phiniac, and she also got one for me! It is a custom logo sandblasting of a tattoo I have on my left rib cage and the folks at Phiniac did an absolutely AWESOME job recreating it here! Both tanks look amazing and it's particularily special that I have one that reflects something so close to my heart - literally; Buy the ticket, take the ride. I am also given to understand that the kind of customer service one can expect from this company is top-notch, they really take care of their customers. Thank you Phiniac!

OUCH, pwyll!

I lucked out with one of my Phinny's a couple of weeks ago. I was leaving the house to take Ben the Dog for his walk. As I held his leash, I was trying to put my BP with a trippy and a Phinny on it into my jeans pocket, Ben pulled left and the BP all decked out, went crashing into the concrete driveway.

I was afraid to look but when I did, everything was still intact. Someone was looking after me. I had a serious talk with Ben about he knows better than to pull me with all of his 14 lbs.

Edit: forgot to say, that that Phinny had SS caps too.

Between two cats, two dogs and a daughter, it's fallen plenty before. I switch between the delrin and ss caps, depending on the mod upon which it is sitting at the time, so it's had plenty of falls with both caps. Frankly, it's survived surprising falls already, so it was probably already living on borrowed time as it was. It's hit concrete and blacktop and hardwood, but I don't think it's ever fallen from quite this height before. All in all, though, it's glass--and glass can survive a surprising amount of abuse as well as succumb to a surprisingly small amount of trauma: you never really know how it's going to react :)

Overhang is exactly the same on the caps, they are machined to the same exact specs. But there will be much less of a chance that a fall with delrin caps will result in a break then stainless. The delrin is a softer material and will absorb the impact, where as stainless is a much harder material and will not, I am not so sure, but it is even a possibility that the SS might pass some of the impact onto the glass. What did it fall on? We did several tests without any caps on a hardwood oak floors and they survived every time. It could be it was just it's time. If memory serves correct you are the one that told story about hiding under a glass table that broke for absolutely no reason... sometimes glass just breaks.

All of that being said, when we moved titanium we changed the specs so there was less surface area inside the tank (still the same outside specs, so same overhang) so the titanium could provide a little more protection then the SS.

Well, it may simply be an optical illusion due to the differing colours and reflective natures, but the stainless is obviously just barely proud of the glass wall while the delrin at least looks like it's out almost a sixteenth of an inch. I'll have to sit them cap-to-cap just to satisfy my own curiosity, now.

What it fell on was that industrial linoleum tile--the stuff that feels like concrete (until you compare them directly, side-by-side). I haven't decided if I think it was the solidity of the steel transferring kinetic energy to the glass (as you speculated) or that the tile is just flexible enough that it contacted the glass directly and negated the benefit of the overhang.

And as I mentioned to sashwa and you mention here, sometimes it just breaks. I've been debating on whether to see about sending it back to see if you could phrost it or just ordering a new one to be phrosted anyway, so in the end I think it was "just its time." :)

We have a bit of stuffs going on here, and so when things even out here and calm down a bit there, I'll send you an email to see exactly what we're going to replace her with ;)

I remember working on that one! I am happy you like the finish product. I had to remove a bunch of the "splotches" or "drips" (or whatever you want to call them as they were just too small to sandblast and then make a few larger so they would be noticable . I also had to thicken pretty much all of the lines in all of the letters. With all the changes I was concerned that I was getting too far away from the original design that is close to your heart!

I have a few doctors appointment this coming week. It seems like these days I have a few every week. :(

I did however have another surgeon in this last surgery take care of an issue that I have been putting off for 12 years since I gave birth to my son, and he has wanted to see weekly since the surgery. Good news is after last week he said he wants to see me in six weeks :) :) I am happy to say that at least all the appointments are not cancer related!

I hear you on the credit card... we have been having to spend money like crazy here.

The tanks sometimes have small variances in the OD, but the cap specs are the same... every now and again I have seen a cap come out of the machine shop that is different then the rest .... that could be the case.

Not at all moo, you did an absolutely awesome job here! And since my girlfriend has had more thanks then I can give ;) It's only right to come share the love! Just for you, here's a pic of the original design, branded right on my skin, to show you just how close your work came. Once again, thank you!

Since I only have the one clear tank, variances in the glass wouldn't be an issue. When you said the steel and delrin were machined to the same specs I figured I might have gotten a slightly out-of-spec set of delrin caps, but once I was able to dig them up and compare, they are identical in size (been a while since the delrin caps were on the Umbrella tank).

I think it's a matter of the differences in reflectivity and contrast, though (my perception of a slight difference in size). When I look at the cobalt tank with delrin caps next to the clear tank with stainless caps there is obviously more overhang on the cobalt/delrin--even when I set them next to each other physically and see there is no measurable difference. It's kinda cool seeing a difference and no difference at the same time, but then I am easily amused ;)

Happy Mother's Day, and good luck with all your appointments this week :)

I wanted to hop on the last sale but was indecisive... Then I wanted to hop on this sale and be a happy mother's day to me and am again indecisive. I know you do custom work. Have you done a face? _DSC0062.jpg I am working on this one and not sure whether to tone down details more or black out, or go negative... Do you think it could be done if I tweaked it? Adjusting that cheek right now. It's not an exact science just an eyeballing it...
