Phlegm and starting vaping

Hello all..... I am completely new to vaping. I purchased a joyetech 510 where I put my own liquid in... I have VG tobacco flavored and VG virginia flue cured flavor..... I have not quit analogs and have just been puffing occasionally on the ecig. My first night I got it... I puffed on it exclusively for several hours. I never felt the need to have an analog. So, I am really excited... My problem or question is... As I puff on the ecig for either one of my liquids after about 2 or 3 puffs I feel sort of phlegm build up... like I have something in the back of my throat.... then I don't puff on the ecig and it goes away.... Has anyone else had this happen? Is this normal? I am so excited but not sure if I can handle trading off the chemicals to feel like I constantly have something in the back of my throat... so a little discouraged... I tried researching in the FAQ's and searching but did not find another post about this.

I appreciate any feedback..

Thank you

That usually happens when you don't drink enough water while vaping. Vaping can dehydrate you quite a bit, and will result in your mucous membranes going into overdrive. However, if rehydration does not help I'd suggest that you ask your doctor.

Thank you.... I read about the dehydration factor.... I tried drinking water before and after as well... Thank you very much :)

Here's some additional information: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/health-safety-e-smoking/3305-list-symptoms-when-quitting-tobacco-changing-ecigarette.html

Definitely need to go overboard with the water. When you think you've drunk enough, drink more.

Thank you.... very much..... I am not eliminating that it could be a climate change thing as I am here in MN and we just went from 20 to 70 in a few days... that is also something that I just thought of. Thank you very much.... :) A friend of mine started at the same time and he has had no problems.... might just be dehydrated!

When I first started vaping I experienced something similar - I was actually coughing up phlegm & having to spit rather frequently. I was concerned about this until I realized, what had happened was my old hacking "smoker's cough" had suddenly become productive. Now, for the first time in years all that stuff I'd been building up in my lungs was beginning to break loose and come out! I was at that time vaping 80PG/20VG 18 - 24mg nic. Anyway I think that's a pretty normal thing to happen, and a good thing too. Drinking lots of water is important though to help keep you properly hydrated & to help everything get flushed that needs flushing.

Happy Vaping! :toast:

My experience was similar to Warren's. I had sinus problems for years due to allergies and smoking. For a couple of weeks after I started vaping I had a lot of drainage and a sore throat. It went away after a few weeks. This time of year is bad for allergies, but my allergy symptoms are much better now than they were when I was smoking.

If your symptoms don't improve after a couple of weeks you might consider the possibility that you may be allergic to vg. Switching to pg or a mixture of pg/vg may solve that problem.

I quit smoking analogs for 12 years before returning to it 3 years ago...so I've quit analogs twice now. The first time I quit, I was coughing up quite a bit of pretty nasty stuff. It was the 'normal' process of my lungs clearing themselves of all the stuff I had been putting in them for so long.

I don't think anyone would argue that drinking plenty of water is a bad idea whether you're smoking analogs or not or whether you're vaping or not.

Happy vaping and Happy hydrating!

In a similar vein, I experienced a bit of the same thing.
I'd had a low-grade, lingering cough, which wasn't really productive, but it would get worse any time I got sick (infrequently), and then last for weeks and weeks afterward.
Once I switched to vaping, I found within a couple of weeks that cough just disappeared completely. Four months now, it's been gone. I couldn't be happier about it.

Like Warren & Tigerlily, I had more phlegm in the beginning, but it was the old sludge from my lungs working its way out. Hot steamy showers in the morning helped me move it on out more quickly. Now, no smoker's cough in the morning, and sinuses & allergies are WAY less annoying. It took me a couple of weeks to 'work it out', but I feel great now. I don't get winded as easily and am able to be more active. And yes, I drink lots more fluid than before. I do stay away from moo juice since it makes me more mucous-y.

Hi just curious but have you tried PG rather than the VG stuff? Everyone I know is using the PG stuff one guy just constantly vapes away here in work and doesnt seem to get any of the symptons you have described.

I was a little curious about that... I think that I might order the same flavor bottle of PG and try it or Mix it. Thank you for mentioning that and the advice :)

Thank you Warren and glad to know it went away :)

Thank you very much.... :) So happy to know there are others out there :)

That is beautiful! Congratulations and I really really look forward to the same :)

Also, some people seem to have allergies associated with VG. If it continues, I would try a PG alternative.

I am leaning towards the VG not working for me. My husband decided that he was going to try vaping as well and he has not had the same thing happen to him with using the same liquid... so I am going to order some PG this week and try doing a 50/50 and see how that works.

Thank you so much everyone for your input! Much Love and Happy Vaping!

It occurs to me now... I see a number of people recommending conscientious hydration when vaping.
I'm not certain I understand exactly why that would be necessary (moreso than any time else), but I don't disagree with it.
Personally, I find when smoking cigarettes to need a lot more hydration. Smoking always made my throat feel dry and thirsty. I don't seem to experience that with vapor.
Drinking lots of water is good advice anyway, no matter what your vices are!
