I saw a few threads on this, I just wanted to ask on my situation

I started vaping a month ago, and was still smoking analogs, 3 weeks ago i quit analogs for good, just vaping, 24MG nic, in my riva 510, i have a bunch of diff liquids from all vendors, PG/VG mix mainly, 60/40, 80.20 , etc

it was all going great, my taste buds were starting to come back also !!!

now all of a sudden I got bad Phlegm in the back of my throat, where i constantly have to clear my throat, I do have acid reflux too, i wonder if that could be a problem

I am going to the doctor, but they dont know anything about E-cigs/vaping so it is better to ask ere

why after a month did the phlegm start ??? is it def from vaping ??? and what actions can i take, I really like vaping and i cant believe i quit analogs so quick, i do not want to go back

thanks

The answer you'll get is that it's from your lungs clearing themselves. I learned that from all the 'quit smoking' material and classes that I've experienced. It takes several weeks for the lungs to 'wake up' from the analog chemicals and start to work again.

Let us know what your doctor says though.

Phlegm... ugh. We all have it, but excess phlegm is usually caused by an irritation to the throat, and vaping (like smoking) can cause irritation (most people starting to vape complain about a sore throat). Getting a few dry, hot hits off an atty can irritate your throat as well, and cause phlegm. I'd say that's most likely the issue for you (breaking in to vaping) since you've been vaping a short period of time.

Keep in mind that this is also the season for post nasal drip! Allergies! Causes drainage down your throat. This is not coming up out of the lungs... right?. Did you previously have sinus reactions this time of the year (sinus problems, sneezing, coughing)??

Vapor can stick to it in the back of your throat and make you miserable. Drink plenty of water, gargle with salt water and maybe try an allergy medication with a decongestant (after talking to your Dr. first preferably). I'm dealing with it this year off and on lately (and I've vaped over 2 years and this is the first time it's bothered me bad, making me cough once in a while when I vape). I have a friend who can't vape much during a few times of the year because she coughs so much from vapor sticking in her throat from the drainage. She knows it's allergies to the pollens in the air this time of year.

Because excess phlegm can be allergy induced... keep an eye out that it could be your liquid. Certain flavorings can trigger it, and a reaction to PG or VG can cause problems (as well as just smoking). As new as you are, I'd say it's vaping in general, but do stay aware!

I also have had terrible acid reflux/GERD since starting vaping (and probably had it to a degree even before, but never gave it much notice until I developed an ulcer and my Dr. told me I had it). If you get liquid in your mouth, and swallow it, it can make it worse (stupid me... when I first started, I'd just swallow it, so now I carry tissues and spit it out). Also, some flavors seem to effect it worse than others. Maybe try a new liquid flavor to see if it lessens? Also, Prilosec OTC works wonders.

thanks, no allergies, never had any allergies my whole life (knock on wood) never really had any problems from smoking either believe it or not lol,

maybe its PG or VG i will buy some of each and try process of elimination, and lower my nic too, as well as get on some prilosec, hopefully it will pass or lesson, i mean a little phlegm is ok, this is execcisive , I am clearing my throat every 2 minutes and it constantly creeps right back up to back of my throat

I vape pretty much the same ejuice anytime I'm awake. Lately using 50/50 or > % VG Cinnamon Ceylon. I got a batch, dated 11/20/10, 30mg, 60/40 pg/vg. I cut this with various amounts of straight VG. Diluting both the nic level and flavor considerable. Latest batch was cut 50/50 store bought w/straight VG. Last 6 months I've been using the same Cinnamon Ceylon. All this time I still hack up a phlegm everyday. Haven't used the 50/50 blend but 24 hours, over my weekend, (Mon, Tue, & Wed, work graveyard shift). I'm convinced the VG is what is being expelled. But, haven't had anything tested/analyzed, so it's JMHO.

Cheers,

Acid reflux is considered to be a possible side effect from smoking cessation. I wonder if it might be due to a change in diet which will undoubtedly occur when you can actually taste food again. Acid reflux can cause post nasal drip (it sometimes does in my case, I had GERD before I started smoking). As Helen A Handbasket said, OTC acid reducers are a great way to deal with acid reflux. Just stay on them for several weeks at least to allow your esophagus to heal.

As far as the phlegm goes, it could be post nasal drip. You might try a bit less PG to see if irritation might be causing it. Also try carrying a water bottle with you. Taking a sip now and then may solve the issue for you.

thanks guys, im going to Doc on Friday see what he says

like I said, the first 3 weeks was fine, no problems, i vaped 60/40, VG/PG all PG, mix 50/50 and was fine

then all of a sudden i got this constant Phlegm, im literally clearing my throat every 2-3 minutes and its always there, so ive narrowed it down to

1 - side effect from quitting analogs

2 - vaping

3 - combo of vaping w reflux

hopefully i can get it taken care of i do not want to stop vaping

Well guys, I went to my Doc

1 - he said great I quit smoking, he knew about Vaping, E-Cigs as he has many patients doing the same, said it was fine

2 - said my phlegm might be a post nasal drip, told me to buy some SALINE nasal spray, which I did and it worked like a charm, the phlegm decreased alot over a few days and now its totally gone and I am back to vaping away !!!

wrap this thread up !!!

Glad you found the problem and solution.

It's really common to blame vaping for various ills (since there really isn't long term info. or studies on it). I don't think I've ever seen anyone actually prove that what ever problem they were having was connected to vaping.

I wish more people would go to their Doctor AND update the thread they start like you did jbones733. Thanks!
