Where did you get the Siam drip tip stem, I can't seem to find them? Thanks.

Missed by minutes on the Alabaster but he has a mottled green stone with gold flecks and number 2 is mine.

The stems came from Turkey and I am kinda on shaky ground getting them. The guy I am dealing with is not real good with English and I don't speak Turkish so it is a bit tough. Add in he makes stems for quite a few pipe makers in Turkey and has limited time to give me so I really don't want to give out my source right now. I will have four more in the near future I hope, told him same length or longer.

Conversion isn't really that difficult. Or doesn't need to be. You can do it a couple different ways. Biggest issue is stability, I don't like wriggles. I have been making the hole in the tenon large enough to fit over the slim UDCT I like. Inside of that I use one of the stainless Siam drip tip stems. Acrylic is pretty brittle so I use burrs rather than drill bits.

Nick...I have 6 pipes with 2 more on the way...

Hey guys - you have some great info here and some beautiful pipes. I just got in to turning pipes myself and found this thread researching stem info. I have been a pen and spindle turner for years. Until reading through the thread I was considering just taking a small piece of pvc and casting some acrylic rod to turn and shape but the solutions you guys have are easy and elegant. Although I still may order some delrin and some vulcanite just to try my hand at shaping a stem.

The first pipe I made I just used a nickle, screw common slotted screw and a nut with a spring for my button. With the last few I have been ordering epipemods buttons and using 3/4" copper pipe to make a press fit contact ring for the button.

I have not tried modifying an existing made pipe yet, but after reading through the thread may just have to give it a shot although I have a feeling getting it chucked in the lathe on axis with our messing up the finish is going to be a headache.

My pipes do not compare currently, but here are a few pics.

Good schtuff, turner. Keep at it. I like the one in the second pic because the connector is flush to the shank. I feel that's important to do with shanked epipes, otherwise you get the potential of too much hardware throwing off the aesthetics. For those that don't mind it, a simple 510-eGo adapter will raise them up from the shank so they can dress it up as they please. Again, having the option for either or is crucial in my eyes. That's the only thing I don't particularly like about the EPM shanked freehands (aside from the price ).

Thanks, artiste. Folks can also use the shortstop. I use it under the battery in my 18350 Jazz. Fits fine. ShortStop by Holocron Labs

Anyhoo...

Duckie! That's quite an impressive makeover. THAT will really get the ladies excited about epipes! Great job. Did you make those cones yourself? Is it a pre-made pipe that you modded? I'm trying to decipher everything that going on there.

Pipes range the entire gamut from elegant to rustic and are equally impressive from one end of the spectrum to the other. From what I see in the pics you are working at both ends. I would be proud to use any of them.
Would certainly commission a Turner Curtis pipe myself, those ones in your pictures are dern good lookin.

Chris:

Nice stuff! As another idea, you could probably turn a pretty penny just doing custom pipe converts for people if you have all the tools and know-how. That would offer pretty close to infinite flexibility to the pipe mod community.

Edit: Oop, forgot to refresh before I replied, I guess this idea has already sort of been discussed. heheh

There's a small issue with that, the original pipe has to be the right size and a useable shape. I've seen a few people on other pages post some crazy pipes that they would like converted that wouldn't even hold just the 18350 battery. Plus, he's got some skill at turning down his own bowls, and that's impressive.
