Plastic vs Steel Ce2 in a Tank

I have been cutting my steel Ce2s and putting them in my tank but was wondering if I can use the plastic Ce2s or Fluxos and do the same. Does anyone do this? Is it OK to do? Aren't the plastic ones cheaper then the steel? Just trying to save money.
