I am having a problem building a coil for my Russian 91. I was doing fine before, and all of a sudden I can't seem to make anything work at all. I'm trying to make a micro coil using 9/64 drill bit, 28g kanthal, everything from 8 to 15 tight wraps, no overlapping and not touching the center screw. when I put it on my SID, it says low load, No matter what I do. Here is a pic of what it looks like now. This one has not been torched although I have tried that as well. sorry about the pic, having focus issues

is the russian brand new? Sometimes the positive block is loose and needs to be tightened.
unscrew the 510 screw at the bottom, underneath is another screw to the positive block. Tighten it carefullyas not to screw up the plastic underneath the positive block, then put your 510 screw back in and see it that helps.

Also make sure that your negative lead from the coil is away from the positive block.

Also what ohms are you running? What is the minimum the SID will run?

Good Luck!!! :toast:

Possibly shorting from wrap to wrap?

I just wrap with tension, and I don't usually do the whole torch and crimp method, so when I first fire up my compressed coils I'll usually get a minor amount of shorting from one wrap to another. On a mechanical you can see it, as some wraps will be brighter than others. But if your PV can't fire low enough, you'll have to work the shorts out cold.

Try taking a push-pin, a needle, or something with a sharp fine point, and just kind of drag it across the top of your coils, ever so slightly. Kind of like you are strumming a guitar. This usually allows them to shift around to the point where the wraps aren't shorting anymore.

If that doesn't work, take the pin, and push it outward against one of the legs. This should fairly uniformly stretch the coil out a bit, but it should spring back once you release the tension. The idea is just to remove any points where the wraps are squeezing too tight.

Unless you have a leg touching somewhere it shouldn't, I don't know what else it could be. That coil looks like it should be well above 1.1

Hope this helps!
