I'll add in my snippet also, but everybody else has covered pretty much everything.
First off, it's nice to see somebody looking for guidance for more than just hardware. I've come to find that this forum is more than just a place to find out about the electronic cigarette world, it is a great support group too.
Your desire for wanting a low stress transition is very courteous to your employer, and I applaud you. That being said, have you talked with your supervisors about your desire to quit and your concerns on how it will affect your performance? Having an open relationship with them about what you will be going through can help out a lot! But, this isn't about your employer, this is about you . . .
Since you are curious about vaping, my advice would simply be to try it. You really have nothing to lose. Even if you switched your addiction from smoking to vaping, you will no longer be consuming the extra thousands of chemicals/byproducts found in cigarettes. Then, you can take control of your addiction a lot easier, and can begin lowering your nicotine levels.
And, by try it, I mean just order a starter kit. If money were not an issue, I would suggest buying an eGo kit, 3 510 batteries, a passthrough, 2 or 3 mega cartomizers, a drip tip, and about 10 5ml bottles of juice in various flavors and various strengths.
Holy crap, that's a lot of stuff. Why all of that? It sounds like you are very concerned about stopping smoking and have better things to think about than "what else do I need". These items would give you a general idea of what is available, and would limit the amount of stress you could feel from having to make another order really soon, or feel as if you'd gotten the wrong thing. It would give you a week of experimenting with the alternatives that the vaping world has to offer.
And, the last, but most important thing would be to continue visiting ECF and asking every question imaginable. There are so many intelligent people here, that your success is pretty much a cake walk with these guys!
