On Thursday at 2PM, the NJ Senate is scheduled to consider (i.e. vote) on legislation to ban e-cigarette usage in all indoor workplaces.

Below are e-mail addresses for the 40 NJ State Senators (at the bottom is a list of all addresses).

Please send e-mails ASAP urging them to oppose the e-cigarette usage ban.
Letters should be short (no more than one page).
Key talking points include:
- your experience with e-cigarettes in helping to quit/reduce cigarette consumption,
- e-cigarettes are not cigarettes, and shouldn't be treated like cigarettes,
- e-cigarettes are smokefree products, and thus shouldn't be defined as smoking,
- there is no evidence that e-cigarettes have ever harmed any user or nonuser,
- the bill would force exsmoking e-cigarette users to be exposed to tobacco smoke,
- e-cigarettes aren't marketed to youth, but rather to adult smokers as alternatives

So according to the first article, Vitale's whole supporting argument basically comes down to, "According to a 2009 statement by Health Canada, the Canadian federal government agency with regulatory jurisdiction over health issues, inhaling propylene glycol is a known irritant.”

Since when does US gov't make legislation based on the findings of foreign agencies? Ugh.

Since it was the only report they could find to back up their insanity!

Somebody seriously needs to actively protest this garbage. I have had the honor to visit New Jersey many times. The skies there are so filled with industrial pollution, the entire state reeks of waste. Are they going to shut down industry?

If I lived in New Jersey, I would either throw a vehement protest or hope the law passes, so it could be tested in the higher courts as a blatant violation of the U.S. Constitution (not to mention grade-school guidelines on grammar and sentence structure).

Given the definitions provided in the text of the draft legislation, this law would ban not only cigarette smoke and vapor from electronic cigarettes, but also inhalers of any type. What if a person is on oxygen?

This is exactly the kind of logic that resulted in the Salem witch trials and McCarthyism. Where is the Libertarian Party? Where is the Tea Party? Is our nation completely devoid of common sense?

Thanks for reposting correct e-mail addresses for NJ State Senators.

I think it important to urge the Senators to support S 3504 (to ban sales of e-cigarettes to minors under 19) and to reject S 3503 (to ban adult use of e-cigarettes in ALL indoor workplaces). NJ is one of four states that currently prohibits the sale of tobacco products to minors under 19 years (the other states are AL, AK and UT).

Doing so can help convince Senators that e-cigarette users and vendors are responsible, and don't want the products marketed to youth.

Although recent news articles indicate that Senate Health Committee approved a merged version of both bills on Monday, I cannot find the actual number of the Committee approved bill. So its probably best to cite the original bill numbers.

The text of S 3503 is at S3053
and S 3504 is at S3054

Oh god, if they're trying to ban it because of the propylene glycol issue they should ban all the cosmetic products, hair products and shampoos as well which all contain it in MUCH higher doses. I react with severe asthma from hair sprays that contain it, can I have them banned too? Ridiculous, Hey why not ban 25% of all the food products on the shelves as well considering they contain it AND the demographic most likely to consume them are children!

These guys are closed minded, follow the leader, sell-outs to the dollar.

I highly doubt anyone here has the same opinion as I do about this. I don't think doing this in public places is the greatest route. First of all discretion and common sense should be used. If something passes that allows vaporizing anywhere.. we are going to have aszhats pissing people off.

Even though I vaporize, I would never do it in line at a fast food place or in a restaurant. I would never do it in front of children (I don't in front of my own). I feel as if it promotes usage of an addictive substance. I will probably not be visiting this thread again as I am sure I will be getting flamed left and right.

Its just an opinion, and I will keep hold of it. You should have yours too. I don't mind.

I don't know how they can define PG inhalation as an irritant. All commercial fog machines use PG and the US Govt did extensive tests as far back as the 40's declaring fog from PG as safe. That's why it can be used in theatrical and performance applications. The original Govt report was posted somewhere on these forums. I'm too lazy to sarch for it right now.

Email boxes are getting full, apparently, so we're going to have start calling, too.

Sample of what you can say:

"I am calling in reference to S3053 on electronic cigarettes. I would like to know where the Senator stands. I am strongly opposed to this bill in its current form and, although I support restricting the age of sales to 19 and over, I STRONGLY oppose including it under the indoor clean air act as it does not produce smoke. Thank you for your time today"

how can there be that many senators to one state?

They're state senators. Find yours at Indiana General Assembly - although these guys do not apply to the above New Jersey Senate legislation.

Generally speaking, I wouldn't email these Senators noted in the OP unless you're a resident of New Jersey or otherwise one of their consituents. You'd be wasting their time and yours.

Ok I know who my senators are, but I thought somebody was trying to say that these were all NJ senators and I had to stop and think because I know that's impossible, but I haven't heard anything on Indiana regulating e-cigs yet...I don't even care if they ban them in public places because I am very discreet anyways, but it would just open the door for them to ban them everywhere...we live in a very corrupt society and I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the FDA is gettng a kickback from philly morris

can anybody help me out here, I will make an attempt to help out New Jersey because this bill could also flood over to other states as well, but i thought there were only 2 senators per state, and the rest would be state reps.

This is State Government action, not to be confused with the Federal Government.

I agree e-cigarettes shouldn't be marketed to people under the legal age to smoke, however, I don't think you should classify the e-cigarette (otherwise known as a personal vaporizer) as a tobacco product. Allowing that bill to pass would basically say they are the equivalent, giving precedent for future rulings on/against cigarettes to, by default, automatically include e-cigarettes. Do you see any other nicotine replacement therapy included in that particular bill?
