+1 on the Provari. They're the Mack truck of PVs (cool looking, run for ever and can carry a heavy load).
For pure simplicity, you can't beat a VW (variable wattage) device - any kicked tube mod, Darwin or even the new ZMax. Find the power you like and stick any resistance carto/atty on it (within the switch amp limits...). For me, 3.7v fixed batts really don't shine unless I'm running 1.5ohm or less, and then you still have to deal with unregulated voltage drop as the battery cycles (4.2v down to ~3.3v)
