I thought there might be a chance you could use it to chrage up phones or MP3 players by just powering it on (while not connected to anything else). This is not the case. It must be plugged into a source USB port in order to be turned on to use the batteries.

It can't be used as a charger. The batter only comes on when it hooked to a computer. What it does is put less strain on your computers powersupply and if you have something hooked up all the time when the battery runs out and rechares it will acutally use more power. This is only for things like cameras and ipods that you plug in and plug out.

According to the manual (warning: pdf) it will operate standalone with no upstream device, but provides a max of 500mA and they recommend that you plug it into mains AC via an adapter.

Edit: Chillin, I read the manual a bit more carefully and you could well be right. The manual is silent on whether upstream needs to be connected before it will power downstream devices.

Ya thats what someone said on a review. It's for hooking multiple devices to a single USB port some devices use extra power so when hooking up multiple devices like these to a single USB port you need extra power for them to work correctly. Thing is what happens when the battery runs out do the devices just stop working? If its only for quickly hooking up a device then couldn't you just plug in one at a time? Only time I could see using this is with a laptop so when you plug something in it doesn't automatically start charging off the laptop battery. For $8 thought its not a bad deal. I would just turn the battery off and use the hub and then if I take my laptop somewhere I can use that so I prolong the life of my laptop battery.
