A little back story...

I just started vaping full time August 1st. I started DIY juices at the end of September. I am a nooby but have made great strides in the quality and variety of my recipes. A lot of my progress has been helped along by the generous input from fellow ECF forum members with a dose from the school of hard knocks as well. I am currently mixing in small 5ml batches to be able to perfect my recipes and allow me to increase the variety of my recipes. I vape what I mix, and I vape somewhere between 2 to 3ml a day so if I make 3 varieties at 5ml each, I am good to go for 5 days. This forces me to get better and pay attention to what I am doing! There is nothing better to focus your efforts than to have to vape SWILL for a few days!:( The REAL juice vendors make much larger batches. This allows them to add some subtlety to their recipes. There is a HUGE difference in adding 1 drop of XXX to a 5ml recipe vs. 1 drop of XXX to a 120ml recipe! I have not gotten there yet, but intend to. I do know that the subtlety at larger quantities does exist and does need to be kept in mind when discussing my small batch quantities.

Gotta go...

Be back later...

Pete

Here is my go to DIY tobacco recipe. I call it Who Dat Tobacco Juice.

Recommend 65/35 PG/VG. All flavors are TPA.

Tobacco Blend Alc 10%
Malted Milk 7%
Hazel Nut 2.5%
French Vanilla 1%
TA 10%* 1%
M Type 1%

* TA 10% mix I use is actually TA already diluted to 50%. So if you have straight TA, use a 5% dilution in PG.

Cook juice in open glass bottle for 30-40 minutes in hot water. I use a crock pot for this step. Good to go after 12 hours or so. Better after a week.

Some of the new juice vendors use tobacco extraction to make WTA (Whole Tobacco Alkaloids) to flavor their juice. WTA contains all the tobacco alkaloids found in the tobacco plant and not just nicotine. This juice tastes GREAT but would be very difficult to DIY because of the extraction process you would need to use. I don't really want to use WTA because of some concerns I have about the safety of WTA, and the other alkaloids can be more addictive than nicotine. WTA is not FDA approved and would then be the only ingredient I would be using that is not approved by the FDA for human consumption, so I just steer clear of it.

I believe BWB uses only tobacco and other FLAVORINGS in their juices but produces some of the best juices out there. WTA was not around when Don first started BWB and originally created his recipes. I do believe some, actually most of his recipes do include some Tobacco Absolute. (Remember this when you are mixing up my Cowboy recipe Landscaper. Try 1 drop of TA dilution per 5ml.)

Landscaper,

I looked at what you ordered and...
I think the Burley Tobacco you ordered is very close in taste to Cowboy flavor. They are both really light flavored tobaccos. I think if you made a 5ml mix using the Burley @2 drops, Cotton Candy @ 2 drops and TA at 1 drop you will be very close to a Backo flavor.

Do you know how to dilute the Tobacco Absolute for mixing?

Good luck!

Hi Pete,

I asked Scuba Dan for some help and he was kind enough to help and he said to use this recipe to dilute the TA.

Hey my favorite base tobacco flavor is as follows:
10ml of ethyl maltol at 10% in PG (the PA cotton Candy) +
2 Drops of the perfumers apprentice TA +
10ml of seedmans TOB506 concentrate (the commercial flavor)

Mix that all together and use at 10%, you can add other notes to it, like nut flavors, menthol, vanilla etc...

For straight tobacco flavors I like most of the flavour-art tobacco flavors.
Hope this helps...
Dan

How do you do it?

Thanks Dave

Yeah...What Linda said.

Tobacco Absolute in concentrated form looks like axle grease. (Seriously!)
Take 2 drops and mix it into 10ml of PG.
It may have to sit for a day or two to mix thoroughly, but it will eventually mix together.
Then use this diluted mixture to flavor your juice.
It is still REALLY strong at this dilution!
You probably only need 1 to 2 drops per 5ml.
You can always add more if it isn't enough.

I mixed TA both ways, with 10 ml PGA, 10% EM and 2 drops TA and then a bottle of 10 ml PG, 10% EM and 2 drops TA. I don't like the one mixed with alcohol at all. The PG and EM makes a much smoother mix IMO. Even the smell is nicer in the PG blend. The other one just smells like PGA, which I never liked even at the peak of my stupid drinking days. Just an FYI from my point of view, YMMV.

Okay...I'm REALLY gonna share now!

Here's 4 of my recipes I mixed tonight.
I only ask that if you try them, please give me some feedback.

All these use the same base recipe. It is for 5ml @ 18mg nicotine.

The base recipe:

.9ml of 100mg nicotine in PG
1.5ml of VG
2.5ml of PG

Recipe #1:

Base 5ml @18 nicotine
Flavor Art Cowboy - 2 drops
PA Watermelon - 10 drops
PA Ethyl Maltol Dilution - 2 drops
(Tastes just like biting into a fresh watermelon.)

Recipe #2:

Base 5ml @18mg nicotine
Flavor Art Cowboy - 2 drops
Flavor Art Caramel - 12 drops
PA Vanillin - 8 drops
PA Ethyl Maltol Dilution - 2 drops
(This is one of my RY4s and could still use some work. It tastes like Chinese-Dekang RY4.)

Recipe #3:

Base 5ml @18mg nicotine
Flavor Art Cowboy - 2 drops
PA Pineapple - 10 drops
PA Coconut Extra - 4 drops
PA Jamaican Rum - 3 drops
(Yes, this is my Pina Colada.)

Recipe #4:

Base 5ml @18mg nicotine
Flavor Art Cowboy - 2 drops
PA Black Cherry - 4 drops
PA Strawberry - 4 drops
PA Raspberry - 4 drops
PA Jamaican Rum - 2 drops
PA Koolada - 2 drops
PA Ethyl Maltol Dilution - 2 drops
(Yes, this is VERY BERRY! It gets good reviews from my friends.)(And even some enemies!)

After mixing, make sure to shake them well, then shake some more and shake again. Did I mention the part about shaking? You really can't shake too much in my opinion. I leave my fresh made juices on the kitchen counter and shake them at least once a day for the first week.

The fresh made juice NEEDS TO STEEP FOR AT LEAST A WEEK and sometimes 2 weeks. IMHO the prime age of my juices are from 2 weeks till 5weeks of age. After 5 weeks the juice seems to start loosing its flavor and goes into decline.

Good luck!

Landscaper, if you're just wanting to dilute the TA, use Dan's recipe above minus the seedman's. Add the Seedmans if you want to create a full tobacco base.

Thanks Linda I was thinking the same thing. I want to make some diluted TA with the Seedmans and some without just to see the difference. So far I have mostly everything I ordered but I'm still waiting for the order from PA. I can't make anything yet because I'm waiting for the PA order to arrive which has my PG and VG in it. It is scheduled to arrive on Wednesday.

I can't wait to start experimenting. Thanks to all who have contributed it is much appreciated.

Okay, I finally feel confident enough to post my new tobacco creation. I have worked on this since day one of my DIY venture and believe me when I tell you that 4 out of every five batches I made ended up down the drain. This was hours of toil, taste, spit, tweek, taste, spit some more, dump and start over. lol The new bottle of tobacco extract breathed life into this recipe. None of the FA tobaccos would work.

First I started out diluting about 8 drops of TE in 5 ml of PG. I shook the crap out of it and still have some floaties but oh well, it still tastes good and vapes good. Here goes...

10 ml 60% PG 40% VG 18 mg. nic
I plugged those numbers into the calculator and set it up for 10% flavoring. Using a pipette that measures out 21 drops per ml, this is how I did it.

Mix the unflavored base and add 8 drops of tobacco extract diluted as stated above.
Add 20 drops of TPA Juicy Fruit
2 drops of FA Apple
1 drop of FA Oakwood

You will notice that there is more than 10% flavoring when you add up the drops but I used the 10% to calculate the fruit flavoring and then just added the OW and tobacco on top of the 10%.

Shake well. This is vapable immediately but of course is much better the next day. This is hubby's all day, one and only vape. I finally made something he likes!!!

I hope you enjoy it!

Lynda,

What do you think of the TE? Is that the TE from TPA?
I thought you would use the TE in addition to a tobacco flavor. Do you use it as a stand alone tobacco flavoring?
Looks like I'll be ordering some Juicy Fruit!

I'd like to see what you have to say about the following Linda:

I really like BWB and I think you do also. I really started doing DIY to try and replicate some of Don's recipes. From reading some old threads I learned that Don was a regular ECF member before he started BWB. His last post was on a thread that was discussing TPA and how TPA was going to start selling flavors to the general public. Shortly thereafter Don started BWB.

Knowing this, I have come to some possible conclusions that follow:

I think most if not all of Don's recipes use TPA flavors. With perhaps a few Flavor Arts also. They were really the only vapor flavor houses around when BWB was born and Don created his recipes. If you read down the list of original flavors offered by The Perfumers Apprentice it comes really close to the BWB offerings. Some examples are Malty and Malty Toffee, but there are also others from Flavor Art tobacco flavors like Cowboy, (Backo used to be called Marlboro I believe)(555 is 555).

The whole tobacco extract movement wasn't around then and TPA only offered TA as a real tobacco flavoring. That is why his juices are so clean IMHO. He only uses TPA and Flavor Art flavoring along with some TA.

What do you think about my theories? Am I out in left field?

Thanks,

Pete

Pete, I believe the same things as you. I haven't nailed his tobaccos yet but I do feel strongly that TPA is his major flavoring source. Of course there's one of his recipes that he gets the ingredients from 5 different vendors. I thought Seedman's Commercial was part of his tobacco base but if it is, I certainly cannot bring it out. lol I'll tend to pattern my mixes according to what I grew to love from vaping Don's juices. He is definitely an e-juice artisan! I hope he doesn't get upset that we're trying to copy him. I know I'll never get to his level but it's fun trying. I'm sure you know what flavor I'm trying to duplicate with the recipe I just posted. <wink, wink> And yes, at this point I'm using only the tobacco extract from TPA. I ran the gambit of flavors from FA and didn't find a match, then I blended with TA and that one got much closer. The TE works well and I will continue tweeking until I arrive. hehe!
