here is a project i enjoyed building
it is a computer power supplymade into a desk top variable voltage supply
it has nice regulated voltages plus a vari voltage board.
and of course a rca vaping port.
vv output is 1 to 11.5 v
i put in a second larger fan glued on with silicon sealer on top.to push air in and the existing fan to exaust air.
both wired to 5v leg. runns verry cool and extremely quiet cant even hear it !
the amperage capability is to high for my taste and safty and not needed for this application .
so i limeted each voltage leg to 10 amps with circut breakers
the front panel also came from that old computer .

now i can runn a hotwire foam cutter to cut foam blocks for carbon fiber layups of battery cases.
the panel lettering is made in pcasa 3 printed out on 5by 7 paper then cut out and glued on

just finnished a wooden feedthrow vapes great...at 5v ..1.8 amps with my present atty.
this thing slides into a painted plywood box and left open in back for ventelation.
now i can play with some current limeting circuts for pv/s
have funn.....rolf 17-P1010682 for ecf 800x600.jpg16-P1010680.jpg15-P1010679 for ecf 640x480.jpg14-P1010678.jpg10-6-P1010685 for ecf 800x600.jpg

Could you do the same thing with a laptop power supply? So from my limited understanding you basically tap off the 5v output into a voltage regulator board? No need for the connectors that normally go to the hard drive and dvd etc. I have built many computers and think I could do this with a bit more info, thanks
Very nice.

What do you mean - Laptop Power Supply? If this is about these separate 12-19VDС devices for laptops charging, no, you cannot use them without additional electronic work. You have to lower voltage to 5VDC using a converter. If you are experienced enough and you can take 5VDС from inside of your laptop motherboard, yes, you can use it :)

Yes you can use a laptop supply w a regulator that can handle it...not quite the idea w the adjustable lab supply he is using tho...there is a full set of instructions to make a similar supply on instructables.com...just google instructables and benchtop power supply...couple really nice ones there that can be made from pretty much all recycled parts

nice toy by the way...:toast:

Nice job! Really like the analog meters.

I've been looking around at AC-DC power supplies to run the RC charger I got recently (iCharger 106B+) and what's out there for RC is just crazy expensive compared to the power you get from a computer power supply. Think I'm just gonna mod my own like you did. Get the 5v out and all that for other stuff. Again, good stuff!
