Just throw a rope over the house... over the peek and down the other side. Put a bucket of sand on the end. Get up on the opposite side as the bucket AND STAY ON THAT SIDE (it won't work if you are on the same side as the bucket... of course). Tie the rope to your belt once you are on the roof. Shorten it up (take up the slack) as you ascend.

The friction of you on the roof, as well as the friction of the rope and weight of the bucket are enough to keep you from falling off. You should be able to stop the fall. The bottom line is that if you stay on the roof side opposite the bucket (so the rope is over the peek) you CAN'T FALL.

NO WARRANTIES EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, NO GUARANTEES TO ANYONE READING THIS. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. ETC. If you trip on ropes easily, don't blame me.

IDK and IDK.... Depends on how steep the roof is, what it's made of, your weight, etc. Rope type. IDK. It can be hard on the roof if you're dragging a rope over the drip edge and/or peek and you don't want to chew up the shingles/tiles/whatever. You have to use your own common sense. I'd use a 5 gal utility bucked with a real tough handle and make sure it won't be too heavy and break (testing it 1st).
