Those are nice pics, Kat. The mother let you get that close to take the pics, or did you use a telephoto lens ??

This is another interesting thing about hummers--once the babies can regulate their body temperature, the mother flies away and the nest looks abandoned. I actually thought the baby was dead, for a couple of days, because it wouldn't move and its eyes were closed shut... Turns out the mother doesn't want to attract predators; she just zooms by very quickly to feed the chick and off she goes. Most of the time the nest is (looks) unattended. We can watch it all we want...

Katya, you know a lot about birds. IDK anything about birds, and I with fruit trees in my yard, I have a LOT of hummingbirds constantly in my trees when there are blossoms. Not now though, all blossoms gone and hundreds of nectarines and peaches.

I don't know much, but I've been learning about hummers since they built their first nest on our front porch 3 years ago...
