It looks like "Gimp" is better at doing this than the way it looks in the article. In Gimp you just click on the white background and it deletes it.
I got Gimp but haven't played around with it yet. Maybe on some slow day---if there is one in the near future.
It does have a learning curve that adds time to what you want to do. However, you can use Google to ask any question about it and get an answer. Same for all programs, and there is usually more than one answer.
