Nope that was Hopalong Cassidy as played by William Boyd.
I heard a story that he had no idea how to load that Winchester. He was trying to shove the "bullet" down the barrel, until someone showed him how to use the loading port. I don't know if it's true, but it's funny.
They were so deadpan on that show, that it was actually kind of funny, like a comedy.
Edit: Yes Jan, very bad acting, that's what made it funny.
