Also, make sure the file size is < max or the forum software will resize it for you (make it smaller to hit file size limit)

Depends on your software... but jpeg often has a slider that does lossy compression and allows you to shrink file size while keeping the dimensions.

i found GIF with web-colors makes the best compression size/quality.
