Recently I noticed the price of basic starter kits like simple EGO or EVOD are starting to go up in the local vape shops, less than a year ago I could get a basic CE4 for 20$ and they gave me a free 10ml of juice with it, same shops are all selling them for 25-30$ now, replacement CE4 tanks are going for 10$ I can't believe it!, I can still order EVOD/CE4 blister packs for 4$ online and less than 2$ for the tanks!

One of the biggest things that drew me to vaping was the price reduction, for 20$ I'd be out the door and on my way to a better life, now for the same setup after taxes its over 40+$, when I first decided I wanted to quit and checked out a vape shop, I doubt I would have even considered it at that price.

In the last year or so vaping has become much much more popular in my city, the owner at the vape shop where I shop said he's already made 30% more profit this year than he did all of last year.

Do you guys/gals think the initial cost of vaping is starting to scare people away from it? whats the prices where you guys are? keep in mind I'm Canadian so my prices are CAD.

I remember when a starter kit was a cigalike with a spare battery and 5 carts for $99.99.

You're just seeing the price change reflecting the loss of value in the Canadian dollar. Since the beginning of 2014 the Canadian Dollar has lost about 20% of it's value, so prices on pretty much any foreign import such as ecigs from China are going to increase by the same amount.

I don't think so. When I was smoking and dipping, $40 still would've been saving money.
When I was in Canada last year, $12 for a pack of cigarettes, I would've needed 2. $20 or so for a can of dip. I would've need 3 cans. That was per day what I needed and in Canadian prices costs a ton roughly $84 a day. I'd still be saving money paying for the basic starter kit up there.

Here it's $3 for a can of Copenhagen. $5 for a pack of cigarettes, but I did roll my own so it was cheaper than buying a pack. So here the initial start up is a bit more, but still worth it to be healthier for initial costs.

No. I switched to vaping in early 2012 and paid around $90 for an eGo-C starter kit. When CE4's came out I tried them and found they were a better vape, cheaper and easier to use. In Canada Canvape sells CE4's for $3.49. If you buy 5 plus I think $10 shipping that would be $5.50 each. Learn to dry burn these puppies and they are practically free.

I don't know what cigs cost here now, but I'm sure vaping is still a lot cheaper than smoking at the prices we pay for stuff here. Juice is expensive compared to the US, but make your own and that gets pretty cheap too. As long as vaping is not taxed like smoking is, it's going to be a cheaper alternative even for beginners.

Thing is a lot of new vapers will go to shops unless they have a friend that vapes and says HEY SHOP ONLINE! like I said they are still around the same prices online in CAD its just the local shops where they gone up 30+% in the last year, there's 4 shops in my city of about 200k and they have all increased the prices :X

Cigs are about 12$ (Wife still smokes).

Not all places sell in USD >.> like above they are still the same price in CAD so the price of the dollar doesn't matter unless we purchase in USD.

When the national currency goes down, prices go up; doesn't matter if one buys in CAN or USD. The Canadian dollar is worth less, so prices are raised because it costs the vendors and re-sellers more to buy their products...

It works the opposite way, as well, as things seem a lot cheaper to me when I go to Europe because the US dollar is up...

From what I have seen in shops...

Prices of kits, scare newcomers into buying the "cheaper" mech setups...

And from there, shop owners do not educate them on anything, except on nicotine levels and then try to push them into buying loads of juice.

Kits are cheaper online, but a "thinking about quiting cigarettes" person rather "see it to believe it" and would like personal hands on feeling for their first purchase rather than viewing it thru a tv/computer screen. This is what drives "new vapers" into shops.

Some shops are good.
Many are just trying to make the $10,000 a month overhead and stay afloat any way they can.

It's up to you to educate yourself.
Never blindly trust the person selling you stuff.
I feel bad for these people, they are getting ripped off, one store is really bad and these people don't know the difference they are just starting out, the store sells only clones for over the msrp of authentic's :X

I've been thinking this winter when I'm not so busy at work of buying some in bulk and selling them for 15$ each with a couple extra tanks via a popular local classified site. If I buy in bulk 100 at a time I can save about 20% getting the price down to about 4$ a unit before shipping/import charges total cost will be about 5$ a unit then throw in 2 the two tanks equaling 9$ a unit. They'd be getting them 60% cheaper with extras and it should cover my vape budget :D

I hear ya Asylumsix, but I was willing to pay $90 for a starter kit when I decided to try switching to vaping and I was buying smokes from the reserves for $28 a carton at the time which I smoked in a week. IMO at $12 a pack, current vape prices in shops here are not a hindrance to folks who want to try this.

Motivation plays a much bigger factor in this than cost. I have given starter kits to friends for free and they didn't switch. Some people are just not going to take to vaping no matter how convenient (or cheap) it is and some are going to persevere and succeed with it no matter what challenges they have to overcome. I've seen this play out many times over the years.

Yeap, you really got to want to quit to quit, first time I tried vaping 2 years ago I thought of it as a novelty, second time, this time I used it as a tool because I wanted to quit.

Prices are so cheap now. You can get an evic mini for like 40 bucks!

I spent 15 bucks a day smoking, so no matter how much I spent on a vaping setup whether it's 50 bucks or 200, I'll make money on that investment in under a month at most. I started with a free markten, then an itaste clk and aspire tanks, then an mvp, then some other stuff.. But that was almost a year go. Prices have come down and tech has blown me away between then and now. When I started the mvp 2 had just come out. Now we have temp control, for cheaper than I paid for the mvp. It's a good time to try vaping.

Crazy cheap time to quit smoking by vaping right now.

I remember when my wife paid 100$ (US) for kits for the kids, I wasn't interested. Neither were they as it turned out. These kits were complete garbage.

When I switched to vaping I was sold some pretty crappy gear at some really high prices. And I was desperate and with a 2 PAD habit at 10$ fairly rich to boot.

Now just a short time later, in the vaping world anything is just a short time, a smoker can walk into the dozens of shops and for less then a 100 bucks walk out with a sweet little set up and never smoke again.

Right now is the high water mark of vaping. What Gettysburg was to Lee.
