Mike, you might try liquid masking. I do a lot of modeling and it's a life saver for small areas. You paint it on slightly larger than the area you want masked, let it dry, then trim with a razor and pull off the extra.... gives a nice sharp edge if removed while the paint is still partially wet.

Have you tried it on these porous Shapeways parts yet? Is there any concern about it getting so deep into the pores that it wont peel off when you want it to?

It would be wonderful if it worked!

My first ever attempt at Cerakote.

Guess I forget to spray the inside. Maybe it won't be noticed with a bottle in there?

Just a suggestion I wouldn't spray the insides, pretty tight tolerances in there. And your right with the bottle in you won't see it.

Maybe a lucky mistake then.

Just for kicks, I also painted a door for my Reo and it looks like magnets are an issue when spraying this? The magnets left little rings through the door.

caveat....what was your technique with the cerakote. That look great!

I followed Mike's tip and use the Preval disposable sprayer. Mixed it up following the guide for the pistol of 36ml to 2ml hardener. That coated two full mods with that, plus one button, plus one Reo door.

I even had a little to touch up the other mod, because I didn't get it clean enough and a little bit of extra nylon chipped off when I took it off the hanger. It's back in curing again. Probably could have done three mods?

I am pretty happy with how it came out, and it looks tons better after being in the oven. I wasn't sure it was gonna turn out. The color was the Titanium Blue.

Edit: Thinking about it a little more. I've probably ruined the magnets in my Reo door now. I forgot about heat and magnets :(

So this is what I got out of about 1/3 of the sample sized bottle. Quite a bit really and the piece on the far right was the one I had to touch up around the button hole. Time will tell if that causes any stability problems or not, but you can't tell by looking at it.

You can tell that it did not like magnets much :(

Nicely done. What do you mean by touch up? Was it already painted the same color?

Yes. I chipped a small piece off when I took it off the hanger. I'll pretty sure you're not supposed to do that but I didn't have much choice.

Be sure to remove any extra plastic before coating.

So far I'm not impressed with ShapeWays.... Just received my package and one part was broken which is not bad considering the small nature of the part. I can glue it into place once it's altogether. No biggie, but I have way bigger problems....

First off, the trim ring, it doesn't fit. The whole unit is about 20-30% smaller than the mod itself. Can't be used at all.

Second, the classic FatDaddy 510 is too big to go into the top body. The top body's hole is sized at 9.50mm's (0.375") and the FatDaddy OD on the threads are at 9.95mm's (0.392")...... Going to have to either drill out the hole on the top body section or file it out to fit. The 510 connector does fit through the upper part of the internal section though.

Third, while not a deal breaker..... The green finish between the two parts (top and bottom) are way off and the bottom body has major inconsistencies in its finish, huge dark areas. There are also two huge lines running down the backside of the lower/main body that will need to be filed off. If the upper body section had those lines, I would leave it. I was just going to clear these sections and leave the original color alone, it was a nice hue of green but now, I don't think they can carry it all in one single shade without major discrepancies.

So far, the internals are awesome and can't believe Gdeal designed it so damn clean! He's a genius in my book. I don't hold him accountable in any of the mistakes in my order, I'm going to contact ShapeWays and see what I can do about my sub-par parts....... If not I'll send it all back and demand my funds returned. Hopefully. :-(

Here's some pics of my troubles: first pic is a dry run just to see what it would've looked like.

Ring fitment, too narrow and too short, will not fit.

Another angle of the ring... Also an angle on those two vertical lines I mentioned

Another ring angle

Top view of ring, and shows color discrepancies

Bottom view, a view of the bottom where the lower portion is way darker than the upper portion, this relays throughout the whole bottom section.

Here's those pesky line marks again, also a huge look at the color differences.... The top is lighter as the bottom body is way darker

Broken leg, happened in shipping I think.

That ring is WAAAAY off! I had a similar issue with a Mamu/Bap screen bezel before, they shipped me one that was way off. They did replace it once I reported it though.

I have had issues with uneven dye in the past, not only part to part but also throughout a single part. Enough issues that I no longer order dyed parts, I would much rather just know that I will have to paint it then gamble on the dye job coming out right. Plus, if you have to do any sanding to make parts fit, there is a good chance you will sand through the thin dye penetration layer down to white nylon, especially on corners. To top it off, the dye process also increases the leadtime.

one thing i learned in the tibs co-op - basic white is the way to go ;)

and while uneven coloring also happened at imat it it was only unacceptable on the back doors and they were replaced promptly. but the dye is very superficial and since all parts, no matter if colored or white, need a protective coat or two y'all might as well prepare to paint ;)
ordering in color, imo, is not worth the surcharge :D

I am going to paint it now ;-)

I was just going to clear the color I got to not save time but because it's a great color.

I have lime-ish green in Cerakote, better get out the airbrush for this. HVLP will be too big and it'll have runs all over it. I use a Badger Crescendo at 20lbs PSI. It'll look awesome when I get done with it.

What you have there is a ring intended for a different mod.

I had similar color discrepancies between the blue body and cap that I ordered way back in June. People may want to consider this when they choose any of the colors that are dyed and order contrasting colors. I run a black cap on my blue body for this reason.
